Madmeg Report 25 Dec 2009 02:35

I've traced the likely Robert Hall, coal miner, with father William, usually a labourer at the gas works, who has a brother Henry 4 years younger, and no mention of any connection with Tedstones or Bradfords 1891.

Here's the marriage of Henry Hall and Martha Halstead:

Was Jennie a spinster on her marriage certificate?

Madmeg Report 26 Dec 2009 21:03

Mary, she must have been a spinster if her name was Bradford and her father's surname was Bradford.

No, that is not necessarily true is it? An assumption that might be wrong.

Marian, was she a spinster?

Yes Jennie was a spinster on her marriage cert. I have also wondered about the connection being with Robert Hall rather than Jennie. I had a quick look recently and as you say there are lots of Halls including Jessie Hall. I've not been very well but will see what I can find when I feel able to concentrate. Thank you all for your time spent on this I do appreciate it.

Does anyone out there think there is any mileage in trying to get Jennie Bradford's birth certificate?

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 29 Dec 2009 23:41

Well, yes, Marian, as she clearly played a major part in Jessie's life. But I am not aware we have a birth reference for her, have we? Or any sighting of her prior to her marriage.

Hope you had a good Christmas, and were not snowed in as we were, and still are!

Madmeg Report 5 Jan 2010 02:29

I wonder if there is any mileage in tracing the children of the Hadley family, Beryl and Dennis? The Hadley's had Jessie Ledstone with them in 1901 and 1911. Beryl 1897 and Dennis 1899.

Dennis possibly married Florrie Pearce, Sept 1922 Stourbridge and had a son Melville in Jan 1923. Melville married Mildred A Jackson, Walsall, Sept 1941, but I can't see any children from that marriage, He died 1979,it seems.

Beryl possibly married Samuel Parkes, Dec 1923, Stourbridge, and there are several possible children from that marriage, and several possible marriages for them. But one seems to stand out, the marriage of Ronald C Parkes in March 1953 to Mary Gillin. And there are two possible daughters, Angela and Jill, both born Stourbridge.

Might be worth chasing them up to see if they know anything about Jessie Ledstone/Tedstone.

We just need to find them on current records,. e.g. electoral rolls.

Marian Report 6 Jan 2010 19:42

Hi, everyone I've found Beryl Hadley's (Jessie Ledstone/Tedstone's cousin), grandaughters and their partners, who still live in Stourbridge, I believe. Can anyone advise me the best way of trying to find them and how to do it, They might remember something or even have photos, if they are willing to speak to me. I've tried a few sites but they don't seem appropriate. Thank you. Happy New Year To You All. We had our first taste of the snow today, here in the South West, great for the kids. x

Hello Marion.
Still on your Tedstoone quest. Have you tried electoral roll look up or BT Whitepages

Marian

Marian Report 6 Jan 2010 20:21

Hi Margaret, yes I'm afraid I'm still on the Tedstone quest, but there are some positives. Thank you for your guidance, you are a lovely person. I have come across a family tree who incorporate Annie and John Hadley (the aunt and uncle who brought up my gran) and their daughter Beryl. Sent them a message, see what comes of it. I do appreciate your help. X

Marian Report 6 Jan 2010 21:14

Hi, yes Margaret, have tried electoral rolls and BT Whitepages, it seems nothing is for free and at the moment I'm a bit financially embarrassed following the seasonal period. Will try again when I'm more affluent, or maybe seek out different sources. Thank you for your help. Marian x

Madmeg Report 8 Jan 2010 00:16

Hello to all who are still on the case.

I've been thinking some more, perhaps not a good idea while the weather is so cold, it numbs the brain even more than usual. I am not at all happy with what we have found or not found. It is all the little bits that don't fit in.

Jessie Tedstone married William Conroy in 1921 in Accrington, saying she was 27. We think she was 29 if born 1892. People were generally more accurate with their ages by then, but no major worry on that.

Marian said Jessie's father was Thomas Frederick Tedstone, but the marriage certificate did not mention Frederick, nor did the birth certificate. He was a glass cutter at her birth, and a groom/domestic on her marriage. That's not a major issue of course. Her mother was Mary or Jane, or Mary Jane Bradford - she seems to swap about. We can't find deaths for Thomas or Mary/Jane supposedly when Jessie was very young.

Then Marian says Jennie Hall (nee Bradford) rescued Jessie when she was in her "early teens". But in 1911 she was with the Hadley family aged 18, and Marian agrees with her cousins being Beryl and Dennis. So at 18, she was not a child but a woman. Marian says her grandmother told her that Beryl would wait for her after school and beat her up. But Beryl was 4 years younger. And Dennis was cruel to her too - and he was 6 years younger. Not impossible of course if they were a mean pair.

Jennie Hall says she was born in Ruabon, North Wales, in both 1901 and 1911. There is no Jennie Bradford born there. In fact, no Jennie anybody. And very few Bradfords in that area. The possible family found in Glamorgan is not her family, that "Jenny" (Gwenllian) married Joseph Thomas and is with him in 1901.

Jennie's father John Bradford is a stone mason when she marries Robert Hall, so he is not the John Bradford married to Letitia who are the parents of Annie and Mary Jane. There were plenty of stone masons in North Wales, but none called John Bradford.

Then I wonder how a Jennie from Ruabon, who married a man in Lancashire knew anything at all about the existence of a Jessie Tedstone living in Staffordshire.

So, Marian, rack your brains and tell us how much of the above is stuff you are ABSOLUTELY SURE ABOUT, and how much is from family memories.

For example, was Jessie definitely rescued by Jennie Hall - or some other Jennie? But then a witness on her marriage cert was Maggie Hall.

Oh, I am lost.

Hello one, hello all! Madmeg just sent me a PM to take a look here if I could. I would love to. You're right, MM, I haven't been around much. I took on a new contract in the fall when I thought me and one of my existing contracts, my main source of work and money, had had a parting of the ways and I had to make up the difference, which I did when another offer happened along at almost exactly that moment, charmed life me ... then the other minor clients I had went nuts with work ... then the one I thought I'd been divorced by came back with a vengeance ... and I haven't slept or bathed in a week ... or more ... and I am waaaay behind on some horrible jobs, and new ones keep arriving ... and of course my eye is still &%$# and I am supposed to find time in all this to put in 8 drops a day at four different times ...

All by way of saying, pleased to meet you Marian and I'm just sticking this here for now so it will show in 'My threads' and I can find it easily when I've had a bit more sleep and see whether there's anything I can do to help!
