Steven

you are into looking at parish registers to find records on ancestors before 1837.

SatNav found that record on the International Genealogical Index on www.familysearch.org

This is the Mormon site, and it does carry a lot of records extracted from parish registers

However, it also has a lot of records which have been submitted by individuals, usually church members, and they do not have any backing documentation. So you must treat the submitted records with great caution .... do not enter them into your tree until and unless you can find documentation.

Go to the web site, click on Advanced Search, scroll down to International Genealogical Index (usually abbreviated as I G I)

You can also see if there is a Family History Society for the area (town/village, etc), sometimes they have records on their sites, or you can buy cds etc. You might have to pay to access records

Google to see if there are any Online Parish Clerks records

Google ancestors name ..... surprising what emerges from google!

Henry Wittridge was my GGG grandfather, born in SHERBORNE (note spelling), Dorset in 1801 to Henry and Elizabeth (Roberts). I've traced back to about 1680 from online ancestry records and Dorset Online Parish Clerks website (Dorset OPC). Contact me if you would like further info. Regards, Lynda
