Jackdaws.......why don't you email the libraries and say that you would like to access the newspapers for Family History purposes only and would they let you have a card.

I had the same problem as Beverley. Completed the registration and received the confirmation email. I have the five digit code but no bar code which it is requesting. Looks like I will not be able to access the site as I also live overseas.

Just keep emailing the local libraries not enblock though. You might just strike lucky.

Thank you for requesting to be a member of Accrington Library. Unfortunately, we are unable to process your membership due to you not being a permanent British resident.

So, unless you have access to a UK address, looks like those of us that
live outside the UK are blocked from using this service. Shame, because I was looking forward to searching through old papers.

That is quite sad news as I know that the service has been very useful to many a person who reside outside of the UK.

I will amend my original post indicating the restriction so as to try to avoid disappointment to those living elsewhere in the world.

Keep trying jackdaws....Doesn't cost anything to send an email.

Jackaws.......I have just sent an email to a UK library to see if i can get a positive reply...........here's hoping.

I have just received a pm from a genes member who lives in the UK very kindly offering to look things up for me.
I have seen how helpful people can be on here but I was stunned by this offer of help from a complete stranger.
Hearing of some of the things that happen in the world today, kindness like this restores your faith in people.
Perhaps other uk resident members could offer this help to others like me who do not live in the uk.

I know this is an old thread but just had to make a post on it. I found out about accessing the newspapers through a library card two years ago and apart from spending hours just perusing anything and everything - timewasting but so interesting. I found out that my gt gt gt grandfather sold everything he owned for his haulage business plus his home furniture and effects. Thinking he had died at that time I perused more and found that the he ran a business at the back of the pub and the pub was being sold. He died about 8 yrs later. Wonderful chances to find out allsorts. Thanks to Jonesy for his original post.

I was just looking round this web-site and see that they have access to 19th Century British Newspapers. I believe you can register for a library card and access records on-line if you are a resident of New South Wales.

My application from Spain was rejected. The terms are quite clear on the website but someone suggested on here it was possible, but no.

I live in Australia and after reading this thread like many before me was thinking it just brilliant. So, I went ahead and registered only to recieve this email reply:

Thank you for your application. Unfortunately membership is only available to residents within the UK.

It was a good idea while it lasted. Never mind. Can anyone think of a reason why it should not work if I can get a cousin living in England to let me use her address?

Where in Australia do you live? If you are in New South Wales you can register at The Library for New South Wales for access to the same newspapers they have on the Lancashire library site.
