I found an accident report on one of my ancestors in a Guardian newspaper too recently. More recent than the 19c database.

Hi All

I have my library number - sent by email - as live in Spain - but now I cannot remember how to get back into the Newspaper section - seem to wonder around LCC - road works and school closures etc

Hi, why not try searching for places?
I searched for Inishmurray found articles by a society of antiquarians about how the people lived in early 1800's, found out that 8 families emigrating to America from the island were sadly lost at sea, and about the famine and the help that was sent.

I was filling out the form and it asked me which library I wanted to join - from about 30 places. How do I decide ? Do I pick one at random ? I don't understand , its supposed to be on line ?

The newspaper archive is online but you have to become a member of a Lancashire library first to access it. You can select any of the branches that they offer, it does not really matter which one. If I remember correctly I chose the first name on the list, Accrington??.

Once you have enrolled the only offline activity is when you will receive your membership card through the post. This will show your membership number which you enter when you logon to the website.

Jonesey Jonesey. What a great site. Trouble is I am now walking all stooped over. You don't realise that you end up hunch forward when you sit there for so long.
We knew a distant rellie had done 12 months hard labour as I have seen the Gaol books. Trouble is other rellies don't believe me when I said that I dispute the correct family name. I have now found a newspaper article on this site relating to said crime and it refers to him as James Hurrell, alias James Harrold.
I have said for ages that the family name could be Hurrell. We cannot get any further back with our research using James Harrold and I can't even find his birth or baptism anywhere.
So now I have it in black and white they may believe why I am a bit dubious.
I must add though that it isn't very easy to print bits off, but I managed it in the end.

I'm interested in joining the site, but before I do, can someone tell me how it searches please? is it via the name of your ancestor, area, or what?
Also, does it access orbituaries?

Dee, I just put the name of the person in. The papers are from London, Cornwall, Lancs, Yorkshire, Scotland and probably other places as well.
I didn't think I'd find any of my ancestors but my ggrandfather from Devon is mentioned a few times. He was in the Navy and it shows his postings to different ships.
I think the only obituaries are from The Times and are for the wealthier families. I may be wrong on this.
It is an excellent site and it is free and so easy to use.

Edit I see Lulibell above has got results putting places in. I haven't tried this yet but you can put in keywords and you can also Browse publications by area.
Have also seen obituaries and interments in an 1885 Essex newspaper. Each one cost 2s 6d which would have been quite a lot at the time.
There are bmds from different areas.
