I was hoping to be able to access the Burnley Library Lancashire..For the Old Newspapers... i joined up with them & did get a reply from them today.

This is my Reply......Thank you for your application. Unfortunately membership is only available to residents within the UK.............I live on the other side of the world.

Originally i thought outside of UK could apply.

Sounds like an amazing site. However, I can't access it???? It keeps telling me "The specified request cannot be executed from current application pool."
What does that mean???

Georgina

Georgina Report 16 Nov 2011 15:25

I guess that explains why I can't access. Darn! It sounded good.

Poppycat,

That is a new one on me, perhaps they have revised their rules. I know for a certain fact that people outside of the UK have obtained access. If you look on page one of the thread you will see a post by Mick who lives in Oz.

Georgina,

Not sure what that means. I can only suggest trying again. Good luck.

I believe you can still register. Go to this site:

http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/corporate/web/?Libraries/37276 - click on Log in at top right of page, then click Registration Page then I want to Register now. It should bring you to a page where you can register without giving your address, just e-mail address, user name and password. This is for On-Line services only.

When I tried earlier it took me to a page where I had to give my address and when I looked at the FAQs it did say you had to be resident in the UK. That was probably to be a full library member. Then I found the page quoted above.

I've been a member for several years and it is a very useful site. Found lots of relevant
newspaper articles

Good luck.

I just joined the Burnley lancashire library online as that is where I used to live. I find it very interesting. Thanks for letting us know about it. x

I'll have to find my library number and see whether they still honour my membership given I don't live in the UK

I managed to register OK from outside the UK , but when I try to access the newspaper collections, it asks me for my Library Barcode :-(
I suppose that means it's now UK only?

PriscillaEmilywasMoonbeam

PriscillaEmilywasMoonbeam Report 29 Nov 2011 17:45

Beverley

You have to enter your barcode every time you want to log-in. When I registered - which was a couple of years ago - they sent me an e-mail with the barcode. I keep the e-mail in a folder so when I need the barcode I just go to the e-mail and copy and paste it.

Did you get a confirmation e-mail from them after you registered? If you didn't get it could it have landed in with your Junk Mail?

BeverleyW Report 29 Nov 2011 18:13

Hi Moonbeam

Yes I got a confirmation email with instructions for completing the registration process.

"Thank you for registering for Lancashire County Online.
Before you can begin using Lancashire County Online you need to complete the registration process by confirming your email address.
To do this please use the following link, or copy and paste the whole link into the address bar of your browser: "

When I went to the site I got a 5-digit code which I was told to save as I would need it to view certain things. However, this code obviously isn't the barcode and it wasn't in the actual confirmation email, it was on my account page on the site itself.

I seem to be missing something.

Hi Beverley

I tried registering under a different e-mail address to see if I could get in but I can't seem to get to the library, only Lancashire County Online. My apologies if this is the case but Georgina recently said she had logged in using my instructions. I wonder if she is in the UK or overseas. Would be interesting to know.

I'm having a bit of a problem when trying to get in with a different e-mail address as I am already logged on when I click on the link as my computer is remembering my barcode and I can't find out how to turn it off. If I can turn it off I will try again.

Georgina if you read this could you please let us know if you are in the UK or elsewhere. Thanks.

Moonbeam -
No need to apologise!
Thanks for your interest anyway.

How does this compare to the new British Newspaper Archives? Does the British Archives site have more?
