Hi Ann,
Thanks but did they not mention any children in the Census or is it only over 18's ?
Thanks

**Ann** Report 16 Aug 2010 01:14

Looking at the births in that area there do not seem to be any post 1911 Cross/Eke??

Angela

Angela Report 16 Aug 2010 01:22

Hi Ann
No we could never find anything either, The son of Florence was my Father, his Step dad William Eke told us he was not the father, the Father was a sailor we believe...but we thought the records might reveal...guess we are still stumped as to our real name.
Thanks for your help.

So the birth cert of Florence son has no fathers name, so where is he in 1911??

Angela

Angela Report 16 Aug 2010 19:21

Yes we have looked under Cross & Whitely which was another possibility.
According to Dad he thinks he was born 20th May 1909 but no records appear to exist to confirm or deny this.
Hence we were trying to find who lived in the house in Alice street or Lane.
1909 to 1911 is two years...they married in 1910 but Thomas was a toddler so could be 1909 or even 1908
Its been a mystery for many years. ;-(

Angela

Angela Report 16 Aug 2010 19:27

Sept 1910 would make Dad (Thomas Harold) 16 months which would mean they basically got married on meeting if Dad (TH) was a toddler...depending on when Census was done he prob was 2 then.

Hi Angela,

The census 1911 was taken April 2nd. Angela can you just clarify:

Your dad was Thomas Harold born 1909?
You have not seen birth cert?

How did you know about Alice Street, was it on a document?

Rambling Report 16 Aug 2010 20:08

I'd be inclined to take out a sub for the 1911, eliminate all possible Thomas's living in Plymouth ( many have second names) and see who is left...then see where they are living and with whom.

Could this be a possible birth?

Births Jun 1909 (>99%)

CROSS Thomas A H T Wellington Som 5c 243

Edit, maybe not as this one appears to be on 1911 as Thomas Albert.

Angela Report 17 Aug 2010 02:25

Yes Dad was known as Thomas Harold
Born as far as we were told 20/05/1909
Never seen Birth certificate
Alice Street is the name where my Mum remembers visiting Florence Maud Cross (Eke)
Florence was classed as a cripple...they never had any other children as far as we know

Angela

Angela Report 17 Aug 2010 02:29

Whitely is the name William's wife Charlotte told Mum about.
She said William Eke was not the father, the father was a sailor called Whitely.
Charlotte married William after Florence died
Charlotte than married again after Williams death to Ted Nicholls (Presume Edward)

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 17 Aug 2010 19:22

am not finding Florence with a father Arthur (or George) at all, in 1901 or 1891.

Florence seems to have died in March qtr 1956, age 72, so born 1884 by that reckoning, and William married Charlotte Williams later that year.

There is this birth:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
about Florence Maud Cross
Name: Florence Maud Cross
Year of Registration: 1883
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Stoke Damerel
County: Devon
Volume: 5b
Page: 315 (click to see others on page)

But there are other possibles as plain Florence.

I can only find a Florence M Cross of the right age as a servant in 1901.

I'm not finding any suitable marriage of Arthur either, and no sign on earlier censuses apart from 1871 a stoker aboard a ship at Devonport, single, born Devonport.

Angela

Angela Report 17 Aug 2010 22:14

From the marriage certificate...
Date of marriage 2/7/1910
William Henry Eke age 23 years Bachelor Dock Porter from 35 Bath Street Plymouth, Father Alfred Eke Labourer
Florence Maud Cross 23 years Spinster, no profession.from 1 Alice street (Which confirmed Mums memory) Father Arthur George Cross Labourer

So this does not match with the birth year of 1883 ??

If you found a Florence M cross of right age in 1901 she would be 14 years does it give any other info ..say where she lived DOB etc

Year of death could be about right as William was remarried when he visited us in 1959

Don't konw if the Cross family originated from Devon or not...or who Florence Mum was.

Thank you i never knew what Charlottes surname was before she married Willaim Eke.

Madmeg Report 17 Aug 2010 23:10

Hi Angela

I am thinking that Florence Maud may have lied about her age on marriage, as she was older than William. It was quite common for a woman to do that. And on her death in 1956, she is stated as 72. If it is the right death of course, but I can't find any other more suitable. You might have to purchase the certificate to prove that this was the death of the wife of William.

The Florence M I found in 1901 was born in 1881, so perhaps not right at all.

I just wish we could find Florence with her father, Arthur. Or find Arthur anywhere other than in 1871, single. Maybe he wasn't her father, maybe she was illegitimate and he married her mother later. But I can't find a reasonable marriage for him either, not around the time of Florence's supposed birth. There are a couple of Arthur G Crosses marrying in the early 1900s, but they wouldn't be Florence's mother, I don't think.

How do you know she was called Florence Maud?

There is an Arthur George Cross marrying a Florence May H Brooks in 1902. Too late, of course, to be likely.

I am running out of ideas.

Jan, any luck with the Whitely connection you thought you had found?

None of this is helping to find where your father was, born 1909, not on the 1911 census with his mother and supposed father at the time. Really odd.

But we don't know his surname, so we are stuck.

I hope somebody else comes along with a bright idea.

Margaret

Angela Report 18 Aug 2010 00:56

Hi
Thanks for all your help and ideas so far.

I ordered a copy of the marriage certificate many years ago.

It states her name as Florence Maud Cross & Father Arthur George Cross

I also thought if i could trace Florence parents i would find something else but i had no luck there...i don't know that they came from Plymouth...they may have lived somewhere else before Alice street...is there any way of finding out who has lived in Alice street over the years so we have an idea if Florence was born in or out of Plymouth ?? or whether she lived somewhere else before moving in with her Father...or maybe he moved in with her??

Fanny BG,

I saw that one and think you may be on to something, there are only a couple of Thomas Harolds and very few Thomas H born Devonshire 1908/10.

Was also thinking another route to go would be the records office for a baptism record........looking first in district the family are located in 1911.......did the mothe rmarry in church if so could be the same one
