If you are lucky enough to have an address in NZ of your relitive then don't forget to have a look at

google earth.

and if you are luck enough to have an address in Auckland look here

http://maps.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/aucklandcouncilviewer/

click on tools (left had side box icon)
click on historic aerial photography
on the right is a sliding bar that will give you Aerial photos as early as 1940
you can only search by current address but this should not be too different from the original address. It also gives you a good impression to how Auckland has changed since then.

This may be the same for other NZ council regions

Always knew my dad's sister as "aunty Janet", she was born Jane.
Married and emigrated to Australia.
From this end, found husband and two children.
Thanks for the links..... lots more to go through.
Found in national archives the records for their arrival.
Her name is completely different ! Another can of worms...

Many thanks, this will keep me busy for a while :-D

I have been in touch with our Archives... http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/

and asked them how do overseas people get to see what is available on open access but says you have to order and view at whichever office the Archive is held.. the archive places are in our main centres....

The site help instructions don't really provide the way to go about it etc.

So this is what I now have on files that have open access:

"Thank you for your enquiry regarding ordering archival records.

You do not need a reader number to order from overseas. You just need to send an email to the relevant Archives New Zealand office including information about the record you require. We will tell you how much it will cost for us to photocopy the information and will send you an electronic link to make payment. Each probate costs $20.00 which includes photocopying. Other records are $25 per one half hour research time and also include photocopying up to 20 pages."

Now remember the NZ $ is worth less (not worthless) then a lot of other currencies it is probably not that expensive..

Kevin this is a thread advising people where to look...

You should put your request on find living relatives board...

However there is a Roy Hood living in Ashhurst Palmerston North in the NZ white pages phone book...

http://whitepages.co.nz/whitepages/search/Palmerston+North/R+hood-1.html

so you could call him..

I was checking out a spouse and by googling his name I came up with this on rootsweb which has a heap of marriages, mostly Papakura but also others.

Thank you Tony , Quinsgran and Persey for these links.
I'm sure they will be really helpful to people, especially in UK who don't know where to start looking.

I can also do marriage records to 1956 it only gives the year but that may help someone.

Also if you are willing to wait I can go through the microfiche at the Auckland Library for births after today's date 1910 and for those that have died that were born after today's date 1930. It will again only be the year. I don't mind the odd bus trip to town it is fiddly but do it occasionally for people on GR.

Thanks Perse.

I had been receiving quite a few pm's about NZ family history, and what was available for research, so hopefully adding this help thread might lead folk to some links.

http://pearlspad.net.nz/

or even just google Pearls Pad - this website has all sorts.

www.clanfraser.org.nz/genealogy/cemeterylinks.html

I find this one does the best cemetery links and those that come up error if you generally google that particular cemetery you will get records.

http://www.stjohnsinthecity.org.nz/about/documents/MarriagesStJohns-18921897.doc

This one been on the threads before but thought I would add to Tony's list.
