Joy.
To answer your question about whether you owned a farm if you farmed it. I say not always.
My 2xgt grandfather Spark farmed 13-14 acres in Newlandside Durham for years. I was sent details from another Spark relative who had got the info of how much they were paying to lease the land. It had his signature which was a bonus

Newlandside is Stanhope area and the site of the Newlandside limestone quarry mine. The Spark family were miners in that mine. I have a photo of the Newlandside cottage High House they had lived in for at least 30 years. Its falling down now sadly

Hi SatNav

Thanks for helping me with the 1851 Census. I was just about going blind trying to work out what it said, the writing was that feint.

If it says he "Farms 4 acres" does that mean he actually owns the land? It's just that on the 1861 Census, he's not with his family. Mary and the children are at Fingland and he shows up at Holme Abbey as a Groom?

Haven't found him yet on the 1871 Census, so he could be hiring himself out anywhere I suppose...

Caroline -

Yes! I've got him. Must have been too tired last night. Thanks ever so much. I had tried every variation of Vevers and not found anything - never thought of a V turning into a B!

Thank you both so very much for your help, your just wonderful...

Cheers.

Hi Sylvia

Thanks for all your help - have a great holiday.
That road is very "twisty" but the views are lovely.

Hi Caroline

I have looked at the 1841 Census again, but I cannot find a Rich Beaver b. 1821 anywhere. I put in Rich, but Genes changed it to Richard, so I don't know if that would have made a difference? Did you find it on Genes or somewhere else? This has really got me puzzled!

I will have to go to bed now as it's nearly 12.15am. Didn't mean to stay on the comp. so long.

Thanks for your help/information. I'll see if I can find it tomorrow now.

Cheers.

Joy :-)

Thanks for keeping us updated

He could have "acquired" James, maybe just 'cos he liked it.

.................. or he could have been baptized James Toward.

In England, birth registration is not altered when a second name is added at baptism.

I'm away now for 3 weeks ................... so I hope all goes well for you

Have a Merry Christmas ........ and I hope those aftershocks stop coming!!

I have another friend who lives up on that shoulder between Ch'ch and Lyttelton ...... that's a horrendous road! We drove it back around new Year '93. But that was before I met this friend (internet of course!).

Hi,

I've found Richard and Mary Vevers on the 1851 Census but it is very difficult to read. Would there be anywhere else I could confirm what is on there?

Found William Vevers on the Census aged 4months old too.

I have been on FreeBMD and think I have found the marriage of Richard Vevers and a Mary TOWARD in 1839... I'm thinking that her surname may be where the name Toward originated. Do you think I may be on the right track.

Cheers.

Hi Julie

Thanks for the information.

Yes, I noticed a few Toward Vevers when I was first looking for my Grandfather. (Wonder where the "James" came from)?

As far as I'm aware, William Vevers father was Richard Vevers, B. 1818, Bowness on Solent, Cumb. and his Mother was Mary ? B. 1815, Holwick Yorks. As yet I haven't had anything confirmed though. I might try and see if there is anything on the 1841 Census.

I wouldn't be surprised if William had a brother called Toward and that's where my Grandfather got his name from?

Thanks again for your input Julie.

Cheers.

To all you lovely people that have helped me in the past - I have just received the Birth Cert. of my Grandfather, James Toward Vevers and it only took 11 days to get here!!

Born: 9 November 1881.
Named: Toward
Father: William Vevers
Mother: Bridget Vevers, formerly Tarpey
Occupation of Father: Bricklayer
Informant: X the mark of Bridget Vevers, Mother
Registered: 17th Dec 1881

So now we have proof that my grandfather was named Toward on his Birth Cert, (and that Bridget was his mother), but had acquired the name of James Toward on his Marriage Cert.

After the New Year I will be sending for Sarah Vevers Death Cert and Richard Vevers Birth Cert, to see if they will clear up another couple of mysteries.

In the meantime, the elusive Bridget Tarpey is still at the top of my "Hit List"!!

Thank you all for your help, you've all been extremely generous with your time and I truly appreciate it.

Cheers. Joy :-)

Quinsgran,

Hiya, I'll definitely be posting the result of the Cert. on line as there have been so many really lovely people that have helped me tremendously in my search. I wouldn't have got any further in my search if it wasn't for them.

By the way, I'm in Ch'ch. Only had 3 aftershocks today, up to now, (11.45am), but over 3,700 all together!

Sylvia.

I did a good while ago now, forgot all about that site! Will now go back and revisit it. Thanks very much.

Ian,

I do know now, but I'll have a look at the link just out of curiosity, never know what I might find? From memory it turned out it wasn't my family after all. I would go back and look at the previous answers, but every time I done that previously I somehow end up losing my reply!!

Thanks for thinking of me.

Cheers

Joy :-)

Im adding out of interest so I can find it in my threads when you get the cert.

Im also from Oop North but live in NZ like you. Certs vary as to how long they take but as you say the Christmas post will delay things.

Hi Margaret

Thanks for letting me know. It was worth a try...

I was just thinking before - do you know if there is a website that has Parish Registers on it?

If so maybe I could trawl thru those.

Cheers.

Yes I thought of that. I'm assuming the Anti Irish feeling you mention was to do to do with the Potato Famine?

Thanks again.

Janet 693215 Report 6 Dec 2010 22:22

But the name Bridget would have betrayed her roots.

KiwiJoy

KiwiJoy Report 6 Dec 2010 19:41

Hi Janet,

Well Bridget's parents were definitely Irish, although I don't know if she would have had a very broad Irish accent, with her being born in Carlisle.

I'm thinking about my husband and myself, both "Geordies", yet both our son's speak "Kiwi", so I'm assuming maybe her speech wouldn't have made her 'stand out'? Or do you think just the name Bridget might have given it away? There again, if she was in an Irish Community in Carlisle maybe she did have an accent...

I don't know, why couldn't my Grandad have been born into a Family that wouldn't give me so much grief! The Vevers and the Tarpeys on my tree have taken up so much of my time that I'm wondering if I should live with what I've got and get on with the rest of my families??

Thanks for your help Janet. If you ever get to the end of the thread let me know what you think...

Thanks again.

Joy :-)
