Tony, I would have to agree,

If you look at a map of Louth their are several Roads with the name Holme in their title,

The road going past the hospital is called High Holme Road, their is also a Holmes close and a North Holme Road all in that area of Louth

Their was according to old maps a TB hospital on london road which was on the southern edge of Louth opposite the cemetery

I've just happened across this thread. My birth certificate reords that I was born at Holmecroft, Louth. In 2001 and again in 2004 I corresponded with the Linconshire Archives enquiring about Holmecroft. I received from them written extracts from the Louth Hospital records about my birth and my mother's stay in the County Infirmary, Louth. The first round of correspondence had the heading Louth County Hospital and referred to Holmecroft.

It seems to me that we can take this to imply that Holmecroft, the County Infirmary, Louth Hospital and Louth County Hospital are one and the same place.

Anyone on here from the area?

I have seen entries as late as 1955 so there might be someone local who can remember something

??? died Sept 1938 at -Holmcroft Nursing Home Louth-
???died 1940 at--Holmcroft Nursing Home Louth-

(Note Holmcroft spelling)

it may be listed with full details in a Kellys or Whites directory at a local library if they have them or a local history centre.

Hello Inspector and Kay,
The death was diabetes and gangarene of foot !!! The reason it confuses me as there was a hospital in Grimsby where they lived , so a residential / care home seems more likely , but in the family no one thought she went in a home , as the address was the family home for many years after 1944 the year of her death.
Just want to know exactly what place it was ?

Kay, it doesn't seem to be as simple as that as if you Google you will find several examples of people having died there, so it does look as though could have been a nursing home or hospital of some sort. There have, apparently been articles in the Louth Press attempting to unravel what seems to be quite a local mystery.

Can I be so bold as to ask what the cause of death was? Was it TB perhaps?

The reason I ask is that it is possible there was a sanatorium there and the term Holmecraft, after a nearby road / street was used locally and unofficially to avoid mentioning the fact.,

It sounds more like the name of a house where the person lived Jayne.
What was his job?

Seems to be a bit of a mystery.....!

By Googling "Holmecroft, Louth", all that seems to come up is confusion. Nobody has given any definitive answer to where Holmecroft was, despite there being so many people born or dying there.

Some opinions state that Louth County Hospital was Holmecroft, but again, no record online of this being the case. The United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS site states this became a hospital in 1938 after being the poor law institution. This seems to be the best option for Holmecroft but I can't find anything to prove it.

On a death certificate as place of death in 1944 - anyone know if it was Holmecroft nursing home ? hospital ? The informant is stated as an occupier of Holmecroft , and is unknown to our family . Louth is also 20 miles away from the family address where we thought the death was. Ive googled it but nothing so it obviously closed down. Any info please ? Jayne
