Thank you everyone, you have been great at suggestions of places to search.
I have some new leads to chase now.

I am in contact with Jo whose name shows on Search Trees

The Sue Ryder home was more like a hospice for terminal care in this particular situation, so that is why a home address is also listed on the death certificate.

Malcolm had a brother Cyril ( died in Canada in the War) and sister Ivy.
As far as is known, none of them had children in this country.Malcolm's mother died in 1960s, I think.

At the moment I am waiting on replies from Salisbury Crematorium in case Ivy arranged a funeral there and also waiting to hear from Sue Ryder staff, as I was told that a particular lady there managed to track down information re. a similar request, even though in that case the particular home had also closed.

You've all been so good, so I will update this thread when I get news.

I've been to the Sustainability Centre to visit a burial plot and the man in the Office is very knowledgeable and very helpful.
He has an excellent memory and if your person is there, he will be able to tell you

Hi Gwyn,
Have you tried the Sustainability Centre at East Meon?
Not sure when it started burials, but it's near to the old Sue Ryder home.

Can't see any children for Ivy so no hope there.

All residential homes are registered by The Care Quality Commission, who also inspect the running of those homes. The death of a vulnerable person within a residential home would be notified to them by the care home in question ( it is a legal requirement ), so I would contact the commission to find out if they have further details. Even if the home has subsequently closed, they should still hold information which would be useful to you. Good luck

Sorry, I was out baby sitting...........

Thank you for your interest everyone.

Malcolm was born in Portsmouth and was a lifelong friend of my father, even through many letters over decades when Malcolm went to live in New Zealand.

He returned to UK in 1950s and always lived in the Portsmouth area or just north of the city.
He was not a Navy man.
He kept in touch with our family after Dad died in 1970s, but perhaps felt strange without Dad there, so visited less frequently and eventually it was just an exchange of cards at Christmas and birthday.

His father must have died fairly young because Malcolm's mother remarried in 1930s. She may have gone to live with her daughter in Salisbury area, so I might target that area too.....but as her name became SMITH, I might be in for a long haul.........

I checked Salisbury online book of remembrance for the crematorium without success.

The care home closed and the staff made redundant apparently, so I wouldn't know how to check them. I think it may have been more like a hospice for his final days, as a home address.(in Waterlooville) is also shown on the certificate.

I will contact The News, -the Portsmouth area daily paper in case there was an announcement.
My family didn't find out until some time after his death, or we would definitely have gone to the funeral out of respect for his lifetime of friendship to Dad.
His only known relative and next of kin was his elder sister Ivy, who registered the death. She gave an address in Salisbury, so I'm trying to think what she is likely to have decided to do. ie. bury him in the area where he'd been born and returned to, ..or take him to Salisbury where she was then.?

I will find him.

If he died in a care home I'd be very surprised if no one from the home attended his funeral. Every funeral I have been to where the deceased died in a home there has been at least one member of staff from the home at the funeral as a mark of respect.

I would think the Sue Ryder organisation should know of someone who worked at the home at the time of his death who would know if any member of staff attended the funeral.

Was he married? Where was his wife buried?

I see he went to New Zealand. Could his remains be there?

Was he in the Navy or Marines at all? If so, google cemetary+gosport.

There are 2 or 3, I know Anns Hill cemetary is the one most often used for ex service people (there is a section especially for them) but I don't know about the other ones.

Good luck.

Mary

Edit: the others seem to be naval ones too.

Another edit: Have a look at this link......there is a cemetary in Petersfield.

Thanks for your interest Shirley.
I phoned this morning, but might try a different number.

I wondered though whether they would have a record of where he went, Maybe they would only have that he died in their care, rather than where he was actually buried.,but I can but try again.

I don't think it will make much difference Colin. I might have to search every churchyard records at the Record Office........

He was Malcolm BOTTEN....d. March 1983
His death registration is a year adrift re. birthdate. He was born in 1909.

Any ideas how best to find the resting place for someone who died in Hampshire in 1983?
I have a copy of the death certificate, registered Petersfield district, but the Sue Ryder home where he died has closed in 1997.
His home address was also in Hampshire and I phoned Havant District Council and also Portsmouth Council who both say he is not on their lists.
I have also established that he is not on the records of 2 crematorium in the area.
I have also phoned several funeral directors in the area, but some weren't even established then.

I know alot of places where he isn't, but how to find where he is?
What next please?
