Hi

I'm getting muddled - on your first posting you say that Joan's parents were Sidney and Jessie - but further down you have that Sidney and Jessie were Joan's grandparents. Which is right? :-)))

awww thanks lancashireAnn

Spoke to my friend and she still insists Joan Porter was born 1933.

She has also told me she made a mistake about the baby being left on church steps...
It was NOT Jessie it was another on her fathers side.

She also said that Joan left home when she was 21 and not 16. gggrrrr lol

Still waiting for the birth cert to be found.......double gggrrrr lol

with so many mistakes in the info you were given is it also possible that Porter is Joan's married name and not her birth name?

MrsBucketBouquet

MrsBucketBouquet Report 19 Mar 2011 19:53

Know what you mean Ann lol Good thinking though.
No her married name is Lowe.

I have a theory based on the info given earlier that Sidney died at sea. If Joan knew that, then he presumably died before she left home circa 1954?? If that is correct then I can't see Jessie remaining single for the rest of her life (although she may have of course lol), so I got to looking for a marriage of Jessie Porter and found these:

Name: Jessie Porter
Spouse Surname: Toulmin
Date of Registration: Feb 1989
Registration district: Blackpool and Fylde
Registration county (inferred): Lancashire
Volume Number: 40
Page Number: 231
Find Spouse: John H Toulmin

Name: Jessie S Porter
Spouse Surname: Toulmin
Date of Registration: Feb 1989
Registration district: Blackpool and Fylde
Registration county (inferred): Lancashire
Volume Number: 40
Page Number: 231
Find Spouse: John H Toulmin

I checked for ANY Jessie marriage to Toulmin and this is the only one (same person, not 2 marriages).

Checked for a death - and found this one:

Name: Jessie Toulmin
Birth Date: 11 Nov 1913
Death Registration Month/Year: Dec 1994
Age at death (estimated): 81
Registration district: Preston and South Ribble
Inferred County: Lancashire
Register number: C45C
District and Subdistrict: 5881C
Entry Number: 46

Checked for John H death - and found this one:

Name: John Heaton Toulmin
Birth Date: 29 Aug 1909
Death Registration Month/Year: Sep 1994
Age at death (estimated): 85
Registration district: Preston and South Ribble
Inferred County: Lancashire
Register number: B42C
District and Subdistrict: 5881B
Entry Number: 32

Obviously you would need the certs to confirm. ;-)

Oh Mary Mary Mary! How do you do that??
That looks very promising doesnt it...well done you!

When Joan finds her birth cert i'll put details on this thread.
You have all worked so hard.
I cant thank you all enough

I know there is a connection to Yorkshire but i thought it was AFTER Joans birth!

If i had to do this alone i would have Jessie married to Queen Victoria! lol

My beds calling so nighty night all. i will reread all this again tomorrow.

Sweet dreams everyone

LancashireAnn

Likewise, I also can't find any births for Dorothy, Joan and Dennis with the same mmn, whether that be Dewar or otherwise. :-((((

Frustrating isn't it!!

I do think the Jessie Porter/Toulmin marriage is probably her though.

Mary

Edit: I do hope Joan can find her birth cert soon, we really need that info. :-))

MrsBucketBouquet

MrsBucketBouquet Report 20 Mar 2011 19:20

Bad news.....

The birth cert is the small one. No Fathers name.
Joan now thinks she was adopted.
Could this be an adoption cert??I know they look alike.
It doesnt have a place of birth just Country England.
The date and her name. .

Joan applied for this cert so she could marry in 1955.

Theres a JA then a 6 digit number on the left corner.
8 digit number bottom left and 6 digit number top right.
Thats it!

My friend and her sister have been grilling Joan today and they asked her abt Sidney Porter.
Joan thinks Sidney and ....wait for it......Gertrude!!... are who adopted her.

I asked who Jessie is. She said she was visited once by a lady called Jessie and she had a little boy with her called Roy. Roy was younger than Joan.
Jessie asked Joan if she wanted to come back home with them. Joan said no.

Joan remembers being in a childrens home then being evacuated. She THINKS she then went to sidney porter and gertrude.

.

So!!!

what would Joan have had to take with her to apply for this cert?? Proof of identity.
Dont think she had a passport cos she diddnt have a birth cert...
I wonder when id cards were invalid after the war?
I was born in 49 and i still have mine.

Oh my gawd! how frustraiting is this!!!

Sorry about this folks :-(((

The good news is i have my friends Fathers side going back to the 1700s.
They were a normal ag lab Family that stayed put LOL

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Mar 2011 20:56

OK

so we now have

Joan was born in 1933

Joan was in a children's home, and then evacuated ...... which means during the War, so some time between 1939 and 1945

That's when she was with Sydney and Gertrude

Sometime during that period Jessie came to visit, with a small boy, and asked if Joan wanted to go home again.

Why did Joan need her birth certificate to get married in 1955?

She would have been 22, and "of full age"

I didn't need my birth certificate when I got married in England in 1967. I'm not aware that it was ever needed, except possibly for a minor who would also have needed parental permission ........... that's why so many of our ancestors lied about age on their marriage certificates.

She MIGHT have needed her birth certificate to get a passport because they were going abroad immediately after the wedding (eg, for the honeymoon).
