Samuel Taylor UPDATE Dec 12

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 6 Dec 2012 18:58

I have finally bought - and received- Mary's marriage certificate to Samuel

So for all who helped a year ago...

Samuel's father was John which fits the first 1841 census Batman's Daughter posted. He states 26 years old at marriage 26 March 1851 which fits with an 1824 birth...but not with the 1823 Christening!!!!!!!!!!!!

And yet the 1823 christening fits with the father while the 1824 does not aaaaaaaghhh!!

Occupation appears to be silk weaver

Updating again...

Have now found Mary in 1881 - mistranscribed as Daire. Samuel posted to Plymouth with 77th East Middlesex Regiment (Mary Jane born) then to Wolverhampton, then to Glasgow and then to Crimea. Died probably of cholera on a hospital ship in Scutari.

Still haven't found Mary (then Davie) John her husband or Mary Jane in 1861

Updating...not got the whole story yet. But in contact with a direct descendant of Mary/Samuel and it seems Samuel died in the Crimean War which certainly fits with dates :-)

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 14 Jul 2011 12:30

In October 1860 Mary Taylor marries John Davie in Cardiff. This marriage comes up as a match on my Ancestry account with Mary Llewellyn (have mailed a question)

Have now established the following through to death of Mary.

1851 census Mary is at parents and is married (Taylor)
There is only one possibility - Samuel in Q1 1851

There is a match for Samuel in Roath in 1851 at a barracks (seemingly).

The next time I find Mary is in 1871 census, by now Davie (shown as Davies in census) with three children (Davie) and a Mary J Taylor, daughter. Mary J(ane) born Plymouth in 1852. Am assuming Samuel posted to Plymouth (plausible) with Mary, Mary Jane born, Samuel died. There are three possibilities for his death in Plymouth.

I last find Mary in 1891 census widowed in Roath. And her death in Q1 1901

I can't find her or new husband John Davie in 1861 or in 1881

Thanks for everyone's help (as usual)

Jude

aaw and there was I thinking we had a bigamist who could be in two places at once (only joking)!!! So guessing that one of them could be the soldier in Cardiff and could have married Mary. Doesn't explain what happened to either of them afterwards but it's a start!

Thanks all

As Taylor is a very common name anyway why should there not be more than one born in the same place around the same time? I have unusual names where two brothers have both called their children with the same names and even on one occasion both were bapised the same day in the same church

No I don't have the certificate - Vol 26 Page 503 Q1 1851 - and of course it is a guess that Mary llewellyn and Samuel Taylor were the married couple (but it seems possible). Hard to believe there were two Samuels from same place. A conundru

One strange thing another visitor with Mary in 1851 is John Thomas aged 3 born Bristol who appears to have no connection to anyone!

I can't explain what I find, I can only add the info found.

Do you have the 1851 marriage certificate for Mary?

There could be 2 Samuels born in the same area then.

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 13 Jul 2011 16:13

So how do you explain

Name:Samuel Saylor [Samuel Taylor]
Age: 27

Civil Parish or Township: Roath

Country: Wales
Registration district: Cardiff
Sub-registration district: Cardiff

Everyone appear to be soldiers - there can't surely be TWO Samuels born in same place?? But he was doing well if he was in Middleton and Roath at same time!

I have solved the mystery of the original post with much help from the GR community

This is just to confirm Samuel's father (at the marriage)
