That is inconsistency - one says cookies, another says you can see it.

In find my past and the original 1911 site, images previously viewed can be seen with the unblocked infirmity column.

I suppose that is the same feature that meant some people saw smilies with the santa hat on and others didn't.

Question:- Any updates on getting the 1911 census 'disability' column uncovered on every record? I am finding that most records I need still have it covered up.

And this may be of use - neighbours of people I have searched have the column uncovered, so might this have something to do with 'cookies' or server records of which returns pages we have alrready downloaded?

Genes Reunited Hi Kate - You are right that it has to do with your cookies. Any images you have viewed before will be stored in your cookies, so are not refreshing to reveal the new image with the 'disability' column. If you delete your cookies and view the image again you should see the new version of the image. We will be doing a release this week that will refresh all of the images. Hope this helps.

Alison, is it possible that the records of your family which you have looked at before are accessed from a cache? When you get a record displayed with a blanked out section, try a refresh (F5 or use the refresh icon).

Don't know. I wonder if you search for the neighbors and then click next onto your family's record, will it be uncovered?

whats annoying is, everyone i look up is still covered, but when i click 'Next' to see others in the street they are ALL uncovered!?! what's that all about!! :-S

Just an update, if some of your family members still are blanked out, give specific details to GR, here is what they said to me:

yes, thats the one at 11 grindle st.

It is odd how they have uncovered the rest of the street, but not theirs! especially as you say, there is nothing wrong with them!

Nothing untoward shown on the uncovered versiion on FMP. Whoever had filled it in had written 'none' in the disability column, and ticks for the other people in the household, presumably to indicate they didn't have a disabilty either. Most Odd.

i think only some have been uncovered.

Some of the families i'm looking at that have been uncovered have nothing at all written in the infirmity bit. but there are still quite a few of my families that are still covered up.
Here is one: Thomas Rowles b.1887 in manchester, and living in Manchester. Living on Grindle street, Manchester. The infirmity is still covered, but when you click 'Next' to see others on the street, they have all been uncovered! apart from my Rowles family! so i'm curious as to why this one family is still covered, and it is like that with others i have tried looking at. Its just funny how all the families i want to look at are still covered, but when you scroll through the rest of the street, they are all uncovered!?!

I and others were able to see the infirmity column nearly a week ago in genes reunited, and Estelle in facebook said that the column was visible and asked for people to contact her if it was not visible to them.


In previous censuses, from 1841 to 1901, we had been used to reading, for instance, deaf, blind, cripple, imbecile, in the infirmity column; those words were not written by the householder. Now, for the first time, the description was written by the householder. It could have felt quite a responsibility filling in that census form by yourself, trying your best to make sure you got it right.
Some descriptions are amusing to read, such as the wife had a sharp tongue, and a child was lazy.

Thanks Hazel. Not sure I want to see that column anyway. Already got one 'lunatic' which was quite a shock especially as he died v young in the asylum. Not sure why that was allowed to be listed on 1881 census. However, I am sure my curiosity will get the better of me when all is revealed.

I sent an email to them asking when it was going to be lifted and the asnwer was ...

Unfortunately at this time we do not have an answer for you .
I have spoken with our content dept on this and i am waiting for an answer back from them

Same here, i have GR and Ancestry, and i'm not paying for another site on top of those, hopefully it will be available oh here and ancestry soon :-D

- I read that, too, but it was untrue; the infirmity column was first visible in http://www.1911census.co.uk/ in the morning of 4th January, then later in the day in http://www.findmypast.co.uk/. When I did a search for someone on 5th January in genes reunited, the column was visible. I am awaiting for a response from ancestry as to why the column is not yet visible in that site; I have no knowledge of the genealogist site that also has the 1911 census.
