This may explain why we can't find Mary Ann with her parents. As she married in America in 1883, she is probably not still in England for the 1881 census. Although Mary and Sophie are transcribed as living with the Hughes, they are actually a separate household. The birth cert would confirm Mary Ann's parents:

Some of the US censuses say that Garrison Beneway's wife is named Maud. She's born England 1861 and emigrated 1881. They're living with William & Charlotte Veysey in 1930 in Gloversville. William emigrated 1923 and Charlotte 1925.

Mark says that Mary Anne married Garrison Beneway but the marriage is to Theodore - could be Garrison Theodore but then who is the Garrison married to Maud. Mary Anne appears to have died 1957 - assuming that is the obituary Mark mentions in his opening post. Very confused!

Hi Potty,

If you go to www.fultonhistory.com and do an exact search on Garrison T Beneway, you see the obituary from 1957 for Mrs Mary V Beneway ( 1 column about 1/3 down the page). This is where I got my original info from and why I was trying to find William H Veysey as he married my grand aunt Charlotte Smith)

See my tree on ancestry - Bumpsteed / Marsh / Poole

So, the obitauary for Garrison T Beneway in 1933 gives his wife as Maud and Mary V Beneways obituary in 1957 gives her as the widow of Garrison T Beneway. It looks as if Maud and Mary could be the same person.

The certs for the two births that I have posted above, would give William and Mary Ann's mothers name, which hopefully will agree with that on the marriage.
