I have just started doing my family tree and I'm stuck, got back as far the 1911 census, the problem I have now is that many have the same christian name, plus there is less info on the certificates, the mothers maiden name is missing on the birth certificates, for instance my mothers aunt is called Minnie Bennett when I type in the name plus area and a rough year of when she got married about 100 pop up how do I narrow it down to the right one , :-D :-D

brummiejan Report 26 Sep 2012 23:09

Right, first question! When you say mother's maiden name is missing on birth certs - are you actually referring to the indexes? You are right, MMN is not revealed on these before (I think) last quarter 1911. But it will be on the birth cert.

Next! You can't easily narrow down marriages, certainly not after available censuses. You can try looking for other members who share these people in their tree, in case they have more info.
Some of us have subs to other sites, so if you give details of when & where Minnie was born we can check on there too.
There is a more long-shot approach too. If you know someone's exact birth date, this can be used to search for their death (using just first name if necessary) provided that took place 1970-2006. It is obviously dependent on the knowledge of the informant.

The only info I have on Minnie Bennett is from the 1911 census, she was born in 1903, in Warwick Birmingham,

Was her father Cornelius? If so some Ancestry trees have her husband as an Arthur Victor Eling. According to them her birth was 10/5/1903.and her death record is:

You say she was your mother's aunt.............

On which side of her family?

Which of your mother's parents was Minnie's sibling?

Be reduces the likelihood of making mistakes
