MGNV.. you are not wrong.. took me ages but as everyone says. If you say it thats what wakelen sounds like and lemmon has so many spellings.....

Brummiejan... i found that one a couple of days ago so a bit more info to add.. every census has the name spelt different... also cant quite work out who the grandson belongs too... bit of a mistery there... hmmm i spelt that wrong....
in the 1861 censes there is john and isabella then john forster the grandson and two other grandsons with the surname Dunn... so more and more time spent on the computer...

thanks all again... its great reading all the posts...

Using the local index http://www.northeastbmd.org.uk/
Surname Forename(s) Year District
WAKELEN Thomas 1876 Durham Central
LEMMON Isabella 1876 Durham Central
LEMMEN Isabella 1876 Durham Central
WAKSLEN Thomas 1876 Durham Central
Register No. - Entry No. - District
DCCE2/1 - 213 - Durham Central (1876)
[DCCE2 is, I think, the code for St. Mary Magdalene Belmont]

Seems like they had difficulty transcribing both surnames

Nudging this as Kim has sent me the image via PM.
It doesn't tell us any more, definitely says Lemmen.

according to the marriage details from familysearch.org Isabella's father is listed as Robert Lemmen.

so 2 different sites state the name as Lemmen

Kim sent this PM on 2nd - only just picked it up as working all day yesterday!

'Thanks for your info.. the reason i think it is wrong is i cant locate any isabella lemmen's at all in the censes or her dad family etc... when you look at the names on the marriage cert the name looks longer than lemmen.... '

Sorry if I have missed something above, but it wasn't clear what you meant on your original posting. What if you send image to me, & maybe others if they are happy to check, so we can have a look? You can attach it to a PM I think.

What is her father's name on the cert?

The best thing would be to get a copy of the entry in the parish register which should be the most authentic and if she could sign her name may have her actual signature.

Remember that local clerks copied out the data and forwarded it to the GRO. Clerks at the GRO then prepare a (typed in this case) list for the index.

It is not easy to find a suitable match for Isabella in 1861 or 1871. Her mother may have remarried, so that Isabella is listed with her stepfather's name?

Ivy

Ivy Report 2 Oct 2012 06:34

There are four birth registrations in the county of Durham across the ten year period from 1851 to 1861 for Is*b* Lem*:

Name/Quarter when birth registered/Registration district/Inferred County
Isabella Lemen Oct-Nov-Dec 1855 Durham Durham
Isabella Lemon Jul-Aug-Sep 1851 Easington Durham
Isabella Lemon Jan-Feb-Mar 1855 Gateshead Durham
Isabella Lemon Oct-Nov-Dec 1859 Stockton Durham

Is this the couple on the 1881 census in St Giles, Durham?

Thomas Wakeling b abt 1859 in Braintree, Essex, England Head
Isabella Wakeling b abt 1856 in Gilesgatemoor, Durham, England Wife
Anne Wakeling b abt 1877 in Draggonvilla, Durham, England Daughter
Rebecca Wakeling b abt 1879 Old Durham Gardens, Durham, England Daughter
John Thomas Wakeling (under 1 yr) b Teasdale Terrace, Durham, England Son

If so, then since Gilesgate is not only in the county of Durham but actually within the town of Durham, it might be worth getting this birth certificate:

Name: Isabella Lemen
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1855
Registration district: Durham
Inferred County: Durham
Volume: 10a
Page: 225

Just a tip - always use Freebmd for English/Welsh records 1837-about 1955. Costs nothing and the best resource.

Here it is on Freebmd:

Marriages Jun 1876 (>99%)
Houston William Durham 10a 480
Lemmen Isabella Durham 10a 480
Stevenson Elizabeth Durham 10a 480
WAKELEN Thomas Durham 10a 48

Why do you think this is wrong? Obviously it isn't possible to say who married who of the above 2 couples.

I have received a Marriage Certificate for THOMAS Wakelen and Isabella ??? However I cant read the writting for Isabella's last name.. It appears that when it was transcribed to Genes reunited it was stated that it was Lemmen but it seems that its not.
Where do I go from here...???? any helpful hints...
