Years ago I found what I thought was the above's Baptism (Ireland)
Contacting a genealogist to find his navy career he discounted my research of this Baptism.

Samuel (k/a Henry) - states on later censuses in Devon other places of birth - which I have researched - there is no records of him at these places.

Can anyone please verify that the Ireland Baptism is him or is there another identical person Baptised somewhere else?

His father's name on marriage certs is Henry another Navy man.

Thank you. That's the one I have which the Genealogist discounted by saying it could not have been my ancestor because he was in Ireland?
If that is the only one then it MUST be him.

regards

Grace ;-)

Can´t see why it can´t be him because he´s in Ireland, especially if his father was in the navy.
My 3xg grandfather was born & baptised in France in 1816. His father was a soldier & the family was from Birmingham. It doesn´t mean he can´t be the right person just because he wasn´t born in Birmingham.
Forces families travelled all over & often the children had no real idea where they were actually born.......just where they remember growing up.

Did the genealogist give you details of his navy record? I have tried looking for him on the National Archives, but nothing is coming up.

My sincere apologies to all for not answering sooner. My lap top is on it's last legs and I've only just been able to access your messages for which I thank you one and all.
The genealogist stated 'what would he be doing in Adare as it wasn't near the sea'
He did find some records ie census and ships but they were several Henry Darlings born in different places - supposedly in Devon.
Myself I have traced his ships (courtesy of FindmyPast) back to 1862 where he states he was born in Plymouth. The ship's name is 'Eliza' from the Crew List half-yearly account - was in Plymouth 29 December 1862 where he named as a mate.
Samuel H was married twice in Devon as you have mentioned. He died there as a Navy Pensioner 1909.
Myself am convinced it is him Baptized in Limerick but I wanted some confirmation of this - hence my message.
Now I am trying to trace him from 1832 to the time he ended up in Plymouth.
Incidentally friends, on TNA I've found a Samuel returning to Britain from the Islands where a Charles Henry Darling was Governor. Are they related? I'll have to get back to this.
Thanks all once again you are truly helpful friends.

Kind regards to all

Grace :-D

"Desperate to find Samuel H between date of birth (1832) until he appears on ships in/around Cornwall Devon 1862.

I have his two marriages/children etc but cannot find him during 30 years period 1832-1862.

His father Henry is on his certificates as a mariner.

A while ago I found a Samuel Darling on The National Archives - on Governor Darling's details as an expense for a ticket for Samuel - could this be him? Cannot find this item now.

Any suggestions/advice would be gratefully received. Samuel is my gt.grandfather.

Thanking my Genes people for previous help/support."

Grace - earlier in the thread, you thought that the Limerick baptism 'must' be him as it was the only one available.

With respect, there are several other possibilities which by now you may have considered

- He wasn't baptised
- The record hasn't survived
- It hasn't been transcribed on to the internet

On Samuel Henry's 1888 marriage one of the witnesses was a Sophia Darling - what relation is she I wonder?

EDIT: I guess his daughter Sophia born c1871 would be old enough.

Have I the right man?
According to the 1891 he was born in Wembury Devon.
According to the1901 he was born in Plymouth.
How do you convert that to Ireland?

Thanks for all the replies now I'm back after seeing to himself!

Early in 2002 a Genes friend found the Samuel Henry Darling's Baptism for me (Limerick) through Familysearch.

Sophia is my gt.aunt (Samuels's daughter)

The various places given in Devon of his birth ie Wembury et al - have all been investigated by the places in question - in fact the local historians investigated this quite a few years ago. It was stated by West Devon Archives that people 'popped in and out' of Devon to Ireland and back - which I have since found on a 1911 census of such a relative.

I have spent years of time (and also others have) and expense on professional research but the 30 years of Samuel's life is still unknown.

Flip Report 25 Mar 2013 06:33

Have you located his father on any census?

More research on this earlier thread:

Thanks Flip for your reply to my questions.

No I have not got Samuel's father Henry on any census as I have no info' on him as date of birth or where he was born or married etc.

The other Henry Darling married to Cowler in Devon is the son of Sir Charles Henry Darling and I don't know of any connection.

There is no sign of Samuel Henry Darling or of his mother Margaret and father Henry on 1841/51/61 census that I can connect with.

Anyway Flip as I'm 77 I don't know if I will ever get to the bottom of this before I join them all. ha!

regards

Grace
