I believe that you had to put something in the title box before Joseph....but now GR have done that part too to save the message sender doing anything, apart from clicking submit

Just think how many "can I view your tree" messages can be sent a day when you dont have to type anything :-D

Just received two, no subject, no access to their tree.

Surely you should give access to their tree first, or at least mention a tree member.

I have no interest in sharing my tree nor do I want to view anyone elses.

This is more for the fact that many new people to the site will start threads on the Living relatives board looking for an old school friend or work colleague....one of the first things that is advised is have you searched the trees? or the person you are looking for has a tree on here...you can send them a message by clicking on "Find out more"

How confusing is that for someone who does not know how the site works, to see this message already posted and obviously they do not want to see this unrelated tree...but have no idea how to remove it and post a message of their own.

I know some will be ok with it...but others will be completely lost

I treat the stock Genes message as a starting point and edit it with more details etc. Just saves a bit of time....

I also reply to all messages, automated or otherwise but I am not sure this is such a good move from GR. It seems rather impolite to be sending such a stark message to a complete stranger without explanation.


On the other hand, at least you don't have to remember to unclick the box giving tree access.


If, like IGP, you only have a small number of contacts to deal with, it may not be so bad.

However, I am in the process of whittling down my contacts as I had over 30,000 of them at one stage and several thousand trees have been shared with me - mostly by folk clicking on the automatic message.


Only a limited number of these contacts are connected to me - the rest are complete strangers whom I have helped. I don't go looking for trees.....I have a forest full of them......

Personally I can't get too worked up about it.

I make a point of responding to ALL messages I receive, automated ones or otherwise. However, only those members who have established (for example, by suitable exchange of messages) that they have a definite connection to my tree will be considered for access.

That is what works for me. Over ten years I have made several hundreds of contacts and have access to 600 plus trees. Of those around two thirds have access to mine.

Another point worth mentioning is that you now have to consciously tick the box to share your tree when contacting a member - the default has been reversed from what it was.

..................... don't forget that sending an automatic message with that very question has been the default position at the bottom of certain pms for a long time.



I never give access to my tree ..................... I insist on having an exchange of emails with anyone who has asked nicely, so that I can establish whether or not we really do have a connection.


If so ........ then I extract the information for that branch from my tree, and send that.

Yeah...you "do" want to contact them, whether related or not you "must" see their tree :-S

I've just tried searching trees, as you have done.

Yes I Got a simmilar "automated" reply.

This is different, I have not seen this before.

It must be new, Ive not seen it before, i also would ignore if someone sent this to me, and neither would i request to see someones tree, unless we have prevouisly exchanged information confirming detalis etc

If this is supposed to be another of GRs improvements, then in my opinion they have got it wrong.

If this is what GR wants people to do to make contact....there are going to be a lot of unhappy members, I for sure would ignore such pm's
