Hi...I am trying to find info on the parents of William John Dormer who was born approx 1872 in Thornborough, Buckinghamshire. His marriage and death certificates say his father was called Joseph Dormer and mother Martha Beasley ?...but I cannot find any record of their marriage or any census records showing them all together.

K

K Report 15 Oct 2012 18:15

His service record lists his mother as Martha Ridgeway of Thornborough - Did she remarry?

Hi Shirley.....he died in Stirling, Scotland. His death certificate is on Scotlands people website which gives death certificates which are over 50 years old and these include parents names.

Hi Shirley...thanks for 1881 census. Had already seen that one but it does not show William John Dormer who would have been approx 9 yrs old then so wonder where he was in 1881

NOW she says she was born Waddesdon on the 1881 census!!

Cant see a Martha Beasley on the census BUT if she was then her dads name should reflect this on her marriage cert to Mr Ridgway

James

James Report 16 Oct 2012 11:11

Hi...I looked at the marriage certificate for William John Dormer...he was married in Stirling on 2nd Oct 1896, and gives his age as 23 and he was a private in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. The cerificate shows father name as Joseph Dormer and mother as Martha Beasley. Certificate shows parents still to be alive in 1896 and father Joseph was a gamekeeper. There is a Joseph Dormer in the 1891 census in Buckinghamshire...aged 51 and born in Marlow in 1840 so was wondering if they were the correct parents. If so was wondering where they were at 1881 census...also 1891 census.

The family I posted in 1881 living next door to Martha and William John, include a possible brother of Martha who is listed as Joseph Dormer who is listed as a gamekeeper.

As Shirley said the marrage cert of Martha to Mr Ridgway should confirm her father's name and would be a good way forward
