Jane presumably had left her husband pre 1881 so the Maude in 1881 could be her. The birth place and age in 1911 are correct. Prevoius to this her husband Samuel could well have given the information,

The use of step son in 1891 refers to Frederick's relationship to Samuel the head of the house and is commonly used for children of a wife's previous marriage or relationship.

But by the 1911 census she's changed back to Borden as her place of birth.

I've gone back to the 1851 census but I can't find anybody with the christian name Maude who was born in Borden at the right time.

It's the use of the word "stepson" in the 1891 census that has my confused.

But Frederick is listed as their son in 1901, so I would think this shows that Maude and Jane are the same person.

Especially as Maude changes from using Borden (Jane's place of birth) on the 1891 census, to Sittingbourne (Jane's mother's place of birth) on the 1901 census.

HI
Thanks to everyone for their input. I was quite overwhelmed with the response.

Yes Chris his father was a timber merchant

Astra - your idea of Annie being in an asylum had occurred to me. Thanks for finding that entry I shall definitely follow that up.
K - that death you found would tie up with the 1911 census entry that Astra found

Penny - if Maude appears with Samuel in the 1881 census that probably puts pay to the idea that she and Jane could be one and the same person. Now I'm left with trying to work out why Frederick is listed as their stepson in 1891.

Thanks again to everyone. I'll let you know if I make any further progress

A google search of Frederick William Graveson looks to be bringing up London Gazette articles...(his Father is a Timber Merchant on 1875 Baptism)

If the above death registration is Annie, she may have been in a hospital or asylum in 1911.

It seems that Jane/Maude doesn't want to be found. She appears to have taken on her mother's place of birth. Plus altered her age (probably to make herself younger than Samuel).

I see husband Frederick appears on the 1881 and 1891 censuses claiming to be married, but living alone.

Maybe it might be worth buying the birth cert of Samuel and Maude's son to check what it says about his mother's maiden name. However Maude does list her age and birthplace as the same as Jane's in 1911

can I break it up a bit? make the facts/series of events easier to comprehend?

1)This man was born in 1875 in Islington to Frederick William GRAVESON and Jane GREENSTED.

He appears in the 1881 census living with his GREENSTED grandparents in Borden, Kent, his father is in London and his mother is nowhere to be found.

In 1891 he is living as the stepson of a man called Samuel THOMAS and his wife Maude.
I can find no marriage for Samuel and Maud but Maude's details fit with her being Jane GREENSTED, almost. The age is a couple of years out.

Frederick then disappears until 1902 when he married Annie Beatrice LA VALETTE PARISOT at St George's Catherdral, Southwark, London.

In1908 a child John Parisot GRAVESON is born and in 1911 he is living with Samuel THOMAS's son Capel as his nephew.
Still no sign of Frederick and Annie.

Frederick married for a second time in 1940 at Ripon Cathedral to Lavinia TWELLS and he died in 1959 in Bristol.

Where on earth did he go in between? What happened to his mother Jane? If anyone can shed any light on this problem I'd be most grateful
