Might his first marriage have actually been in Sheffield?

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Mar 1884
Rodgers John Augustus Sheffield 9c 554
Shirtcliff William Richmond Sheffield 9c 554
TEMPLE Martha Scholey Sheffield 9c 554
Thornhill Elizabeth Sheffield 9c 554

(I've deleted a man who shouldn't have been there as his page number was mistranscribed)

William R Shirtcliff is with a Martha S in 1891 so presume the pairing of John A and Elizabeth.

An article in the Chelmsford Chronicle of 29 June 1894 describes how John August Rodgers suffered verbal abuse whilst travelling on a train from Liverpool St to Romford. His abusers were two soldiers.

He was stated to be a coloured Primitive Methodist evangelist, well known in Essex towns.

(Abandoning his family doesn't quite sit right with that, just shows)

I see he's listed as married on the 1891 - was that to the Liverpool lady?

Welcome to the boards Liz. Unfortunately this thread is over a year old.

Although Margaret used to be a regular poster, she hasn't been seen for some while. The best thing may be for you to send her a private message (PM) and hope that she is still using the same registered email address.

Liz Report 6 May 2014 11:45

Lily Lowden married John Augustus Rodgers who was Jamaican. As far as I know he had been married to another woman in the Liverpool area who later died. For some reason he abandoned Lily and little Oscar and moved from Pontefract to Devon where he established another family with Susan Bessie Jarvis.
I am the granddaughter of JA Rodgers and my father was half sibling of Oscar Lowden. Oscar was registered as Rodgers but renounced that surname because his father left him and his mum. He used his mother's maiden name of Lowden.
Oscar and Lily established a family in Canada and I am in contact with his grandchildren.
I live in London UK.

I think those trees may be wrong!

Henrietta Lowdon, named as Oscar's mother, is only 20 in 1901, living with r parents in Lincolnshire

............... which means she would have been only 14 or 15 when Oscar was born

Not impossible, and that may have been the reason he was born in Yorkshire.

One would need the birth certificate to determine is this is the case.

No, no .......... the 1991 Census is WRONG!!!

Henrietta was 20 in 1891 ................... so she must have been 30 in 1901!!

which means she was 24/25 when Oscar was born, IF she is Oscar's mother.

It looks from those 3 Public Family Trees as if he was an illegitimate child .............. of John Augustus Rodgers and Harriet Lowden.

The tree shows half-siblings with the surname of Rodgers

The 1891 Census is interesting, if the trees are accurate in naming the parents for Oscar

1891 Census

Name: Henrietta Lowden
Age: 20
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1871
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: William Lowden
Mother's name: Mary A Lowden
Gender: Female
Where born: Walpole, Norfolk, England

Civil parish: Crowland
Ecclesiastical parish: St Guthlac
Town: Crowland
County/Island: Lincolnshire
Country: England

Registration district: Peterborough
Sub-registration district: Crowland

William Lowden 47 b.ca 1844, Tilney, Norfolk, Blacksmith (Master)
Mary A Lowden 47 b.ca 1844, Crowland, Norfolk
Henrietta Lowden 20 Assistant Housekeeper
Francis J Lowden 6 b.ca 1885, Crowland, Norfolk
John A Rodgers 30 b.ca 1861, Kingston, Jamaica, Visitor, Joiner

Address:- South Street

John Augustus was coloured in the photograph on the one ancestry tree that has it. Equally, Oscar Goldsmith also looks to be of mixed heritage.

There were 2 children on the photograph with Lily (dated 1924), but only one (Edward) is shown on the listing.

Edward Oscar Lowden 1920 – 2000

Mabel Winnifred Lowden

Against this, is the fact that Margee has found the only record of a birth for Oscar to be registered in Pontefract, which is in Yorkshire! And that is the birth shown on those trees.

Does this mean that Henrietta was sent to Yorkshire for the birth?

She went to Canada, and married Oscar in March 1919

I wonder if Oscar had joined either the Canadian or British armies in WW1, and that that was how they met??

If she stated that she was going over to marry him, then they had to have met in the UK before March 1919

In other words, was she a War Bride??

On the marriage record for Oscar & Lilly, Oscar has put "Not Known" for both mother & father.

This is the only birth I see for an Oscar Goldsmith:

Edit: Pontefract district covers Castleford where Oscar says he was born on his marriage record.

Was Oscar, perhaps, a Home Child? If so I wonder how Lily met him?

She must have known Oscar before she left England. On her admission to Canada in 1919 she says she's going to Toronto to marry Oscar Lowden, although the name looks more like Logan on the original.
