Nicola, your post 1 Nov 2012 12:02
column three, child's name says 'Winifred leech'

column 7 informant is Jane farrar- Mother

Column 3 is for the sex of the child, Did you mean Column 2?

Column 2 is for the child's Forename's so if Column 2 says 'Winifred leech' then Leech is given as a middle name (not surname)

You say that Column 7 Informant is Jane farrar- Mother but you don't say what is in Column 5 "Mothers Name" I assume it would be Jane farrar, Is that correct?

So the child would be Winifred leech Farrar MMN Farrar as listed in the index
Births Sep 1919
Farrar Winifred L Farrar Bolton 8c 667

I would take that as in your case to be as Detective said the child was Given the father's surname as a middle name either because he was the father or because of an arrangement between the mother and the adoptive parents

Roy

Edit, Note to self: I need to learn to type with more than one finger:-(

Result!!
bolton registrars were great, we muddled through with her giving me 'yes' and 'no' answers.
she checked the leech/farrer birth and i read my cert to her, it was identical, she checked the walsh birth and that had father leech and mother walsh.

i knew the walsh one was registered first as it is first in the book.

the registrar rung the gro to ask if they could give me the Walsh one as it had a mark on it.
she rung me back, they cant issue it because it contains 'false' information.

a series of yes and no conversation colncluded the leech's had registered Winifred as their child, this was then corrected by registering her under her mothers name of Farrar.

this now confirms all the 'family tale'

Thanks for all your ideas and advice people xx

When you register a child birth, you can legaly give that child any First name middle names, that you wish, You can also legaly give that child any surname that you wish

My nephew has has three children, the first one was a girl that took his surname the next two children were twin boys. As his wife was one of three girls, and her family name would thus end , they registered his sons surname as the wife maiden name to allow her family name to continue.

Nicola, I think that a visit to the Bolton Registrar would be a the best bet. If the Leech/Walsh cert was cancelled, they might tell you why.

Nicola

Nicola Report 1 Nov 2012 13:14

Well the advicefrom the GRO was profound!! buy the other one :-)

if it is identical i shall be expecting a refund.

watch this space in 7-10 days!

i might even go into the registrars at bolton and speak to someone face to face,

Winifred will be laughing!!!

I've a suspicion that the Leech/Walsh one 8c/665 was cancelled.

When you phone them, ask if this was the case. If so, they aren't allowed to tell you what the original entry was, but at least you'll know why you were sent the one you have.

They'll probably have to refer you to 'Production' and may have to get back to you.

Nicola Report 1 Nov 2012 12:21

the 1923 and 1927 births of leech/walsh are ok, they are the children that the leech family managed to have when they were older. its the first child winifred that the mystery is around.

Im ringing the gro, if its got all of us confused then its definately confusing!!! :-)

Thanks boys and girls

I ordered the Leech/Walsh one 8c/665 but it came with Mother Jane farrar!

Nicola

Nicola Report 1 Nov 2012 12:13

but the winifred leech/ farrar birth cert i have is the right date of birth for my winifred leach.

it wasnt that long ago she died so we know her birthday.

Its confusing!

Im a bit loathe to order the other cert in case it comes back identical and thats another 10 pounds gone.

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 1 Nov 2012 12:11

:-D

So which one did you order?

Births Sep 1919 (>99%)
Leech Winifred Walsh Bolton 8c 665

Births Sep 1919
Farrar Winifred L Farrar Bolton 8c 667

Nicola

Nicola Report 1 Nov 2012 12:11

So the Winifred leech/walsh birth is in volume 82 page 665 and the winifredleech/ farrar birth is on page 667. which would make you think the farrar entry was after the leech entry.
