I keep reading that people have "public" trees - can anyone tell me where I can view these trees - would like to see if there is one for my family.

This probably refers to trees on Ancestry where you can opt to have a public or a private tree. Not sure if you can view them if you do not subscribe to Ancestry but they are viewable on this site:
