Yes Malcolm I had a relative send me a couple of old photos and asked if I could let her know who they where with her mother who was a bridesmaid Her mother was born 1923 and was abt 10 in the photo many many years before I was a twinkle in my dad's eye.

Ive knocked on doors as well, but i knew where my grandmother lived as i had lived with her when i was a young lad at that house.

i knocked armed with some details i actually had a photo of me in the garden, the current residents, a young couple were delighted that i could tell them a bit about the property, spent about two hours there with tea and cakes in abundance.

They were in the process of updating the internal of the property, and since they have sent me photos of how it is now.

Whatever you photo, take the time to label the image and store it correctly, yes digitally it's even easier. Put them on a memory stick..not just on your Hard Drive which will eventually vaporise the lot.

My old Mum fortunately took all the photos my Aunts didn't burn and pencilled on the back when and where they were taken. This has been a great resource though even now I keep discovering unlabelled pictures of people and places I haven't a clue about.

Taking snaps is great. Making them meaningful to someone else is a virtuous chore.

It must have been very interesting to look around Kath and imagine your Ancestors there :-D :-D

I have taken loads of photos of houses my ancestors lived in. I don't think there is anything wrong in that. I have spoken to some residents but not all. No one has ever had any problem with me taking photos especially when I have explained why. Most are quite interested and some have even asked me in to look around.

When I was taking a photo of the house in Richmond, North Yorkshire where my father was born the lady who lived there even went out of her way to find my father's baptism record at the local church because we didn't have time to visit at the time.

I have taken photos my wife and my ancesters houses when I have located them, I knock on the door and explain to the people who live there now that my ancesters lived there many years ago and would they mind if I took a photo, some say yes and some say no.

I share your concern but it didn't seem to bother Google Street View which clearly show individual houses.

If it's on Google street search you can always print off the image - I think! Have never tried but the option is there.
I must admit to having taken a few sneaky pics in my time. If there is nothing personal on there and it's just the facade I can't see the harm, though it's a bit cheeky I know!

May sound a little strange but while researching my tree I have taken time out to visit places where ancestors lived though many have long disappeared a few are still around I have mulled over the idea of taking pics of the houses still standing to add to tree but maybe the owners who live there now may not like some stranger taking photographs of there home
