So Albert's sister Evelyn Mary could have been know as Polly? Or Lavinia's sister Ethel May could have been known as Polly? But both to young to be the correct Polly if you think that she was born around 1890.

http://hmshood.com/crew/memorial/roh_24may41.htm

The above site is a list of all the men lost on board HMS Hood. Some have more info than others and a lot have photos attached.

Fortunately Philip is not a common name and there are only 4. There are several with P as a second initial, which I did not look at.

Ordinary Seaman Philip R Baldwin, known as Roger, age 23.
Stoker 1st Class Philip A Ball, from Salisbury, age 20.
Signal Boy Phillip J Dawson, known as Jack, from Rochdale, age 17.
Stoker 1st Class Philip Lloyd, age 50.

If you know where your mother was living in 1937, that might narrow it down a bit.

Have just looked through the Commonwealth War Graves site. (Your Philip might not have been covered by this site).

Apart from the Philips with the mothers Esther, Gwendoline and Maud, the only other Philips (parents names not given) are Philip James Bucket and Philip John Dawson.

As I say, maybe your Philip isn't mentioned on this site, but these two names could give you somewhere to start looking.

HMS Hood is famous, having been sunk by the Bismark in May 1941, with only a handful of survivors. There are various websites, including one with crew lists, but without a surname it will be difficult. Philip may not have had the same surname as Aunt Polly.

Assuming Aunt Polly was a relative and not just a close family friend (I had lots of non-related aunts and uncles when I was a child) then I think you need the names of all your grandparents' sisters and see whether any of them look possible.

Good luck.

Thank you all,

I don't yet have this lady on my tree yet. Its abit of a long story. My mother was born in 1934 and for her 3rd birthday in 1937 she received a birthday card, which I still have, signed from Aunty Polly and Philip. The story goes that there was an Aunt who never married but adopted a boy called Philip who was reputed to go down in WW II on a ship called The Hood. This ship does exist. The surname on my mother's maternal side was Esterbrook and on her paternal side it was Capenerhurst so this lady could be either as she never married. Hope this gives more of the information to help. Thank you.

I have two Pollys who were registered Polly and a Polly registered Mary Ann.

I was once told that Polly can be Mary Ann, Molly can be Mary Jane and Jennie can be Jane Ann.

It might just be a pet name, but might be a diminutive of Mary?
Why not post what you have for her and we can double-check for you.
