My grandparents were both Lithuanian immigrants to the UK. In researching this side of my family I have learned that it isn't a straighforward task! They were Catholics however, and I think you may find more records pertaining to the Jewish community than I did for my family. Lithuanian Jews are known as Litvaks.... http://www.litvaksig.org/

The name Goldstone would originate from Goldstein, a typically Jewish name, though not necessarily a typically Lithuanian one.
Putting the name Goldstein into the jewishgen database brings up a lot, take a look at this....

...which goes to show that you'd need more than just the surname to search with.

Lithuania has such a chequered history and has undergone so many border changes due to its numerous wars and conflicts that records can show any number of nationalities for a person, ie my grandfather's documents show him as being Russian, Russian/Polish, Pole, Polish/Lith. and any permutation thereof. Who was occupying the country at the time, and in what year or decade the document was written all have a bearing on what nationality would have been entered onto a document. Both my grandparents never considered themselves anything other than Lithuanian despite what their documents showed. So, what I'm saying is to keep an open mind when researching.

For researching Lithuanians you won't find anything like the Ancestry or FreeBMD online records, so it's not easy. To get any documents I have found it ultimately comes down to paying for a researcher/translator in Lithuania. You have a slight advantage in that your Goldsteins are Jewish and at least there are websites for those with Jewish ancestry, here's another...

yes, I know, this is for Polish Jews, but as I said earlier, keep an open mind. The Polish and Lithuanian border wavered constantly, each country taking a little of the other with every conflict, land was lost and won and lost again. Stuart, thank you for all your info, I would guess it is Elizabeth Gadsby whom Robert married with his daughter being Margaret Elizabeth and I did find Margaret Elizabeth Goldstone b Dec 1909 Manchester.
Unfortunately I did also find a Margaret Elizabeth Goldstone d 1930 age 20 which would appear to be the one year old daughter born in 1910.
I will kep you both posted should I find anything further, in the meantime, thank you both again.

Many thanks "K" I'm trying to help a friend so don't know much just that her Farther was Albert Goldstone and his Father was Robert Goldstone , Mother Margaret,. I have found Albert Goldstone b.West Derby June 1908 vol.8b pge 634, then married to Tighe Mar.1930 Manchester S. vol 8 pge 73
Albert's Father was Robert Goldstone, Mother Margaret Tighe. I have found a Margaret Elizabeth Goldstone b. Dec.1909 Manchester (Chorlton).
It's the Lituanian bit I wanted to verify for my friend whose late Mother was off Irish Stock named Tighe. Friend's Mother was Clara Agnes Goldstone nee Tighe, f Hugh Tighe, mother Margaret Gill..I have found Clara Agnes b. Manchester (Chorlton) June, 1905 vol 8c pge 764 and a Margaret E. Gill b Dec 1918 Leicester, m Harrowby. My Friend did say the Tighe family were said to originate in Leicester. I think I've set myself a puzzle. :-S

There appears to be some records on Ancestry for the country. Do you want to post detials and see if the family can be found?

Please can anyone suggest where I can start to fine a Jewish family who originated in Lithuania? Don't even know whether I am spelling it correctly or if the Country still exists by that name. Thanks for any help offered.
