Robert

Have your tried the Post Office Directory that I mentioned to you by PM? It is in the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh (or it may be the Edinburgh Central Library). You can find it by Googling.

Hope you manage to find something! I am away now until after Hogmany.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you (and Isabella)

Many thanks for your efforts Malcom.

The problem I have is that I do not know the name of the family that Flora was living with - and having looked at the Valuation and Electoral rolls I could not even make an educated guess.

I did go all round the area but couldn't find any building existing with a name. Some of the Area was redeveloped in the 1980's and I couldn't find Greenside row. The US embassy is at the Calton end of Royal Terrace and their guards weren't too keen on me prowling around with my car (it was raining!) Sorry.

Greenside row is near the top of the road known as Leith Walk, very close to the east end of Princes street and at the west end of London Road. Calton refers to Calton Hill. It may be that this is a corner location. I'll be in the area and see if I can find the house and get a number and hopefully a photo.

Thanks for your replies.

One of the problems i have is that i don't know the people I am looking for!
The person I am searching for was staying with someone at these addresses - I am trying to ascertain who she was living with - extended family would be my guess.

I have an hour appointment at registrars today where I can view all the Scottish records right up to current dates so hopefully will have more info after that.

I have been trying to think of ideas and the following might be worth trying if you can't find the right house on the 1911 census, as suggested by Karen.

I have looked at Google maps, Street View, and Greenside Row seems to have been rebuilt and modernised, but Royal Terrace looks unchanged. The doors all have large semi-circular windows above them, on which house names used to be painted/engraved.

I expect most of them are now flats, but at least one is a hotel. It's not a very long road so -

1. Try a letter/phonecall to the nearest Post Office.
2. Try a phone call to the hotel.
3. Pick a house number at random and try a letter to the occupier, asking whether they would be kind enough to walk along the road and see if any of the properties are called Calton View.

Good luck.

I suppose a look at the census images for, say, 1911 might reveal a clue, ie look up by street and follow the street along by house. Although the houses might be listed by their number, it's possible the name of the house, if it has one, is also listed...might your family listing reveal the right house?

...bit of a wild guess but the only one I can think of!

I would be grateful for any help with the following.
I have two addresses in Edinburgh:-

Calton View
Royal Terrace
Edinburgh
&
Calton View
Greenside Row
Edinburgh

Google shows the 2 areas to be adjacent.
I am trying to search the land valuation registers and also electoral rolls in the 1927 - 1930 period - but no addresses shown as above - the residences are all numbered.

Does anyone with local knowledge of Edinburgh have any ideas?

Thanks in anticipation.
Bob
