It is only in Matriarchal societies that generations are considered to be all women.
In particular the Jewish line of descent is always through the Mother, because of Genetics.
So unless you are Jewish then I see no problem whether the generations are of both genders.

Here's a five generation mixed gender photo chain.

Though as Reggie says, it's just journalistic hype.

The pictures you have seen, Tampa, are just newspaper 'hype'

The word generation is not gender-specific.........look in ANY dictionary

If you have siblings, they are of the same generation of your family as you are, regardless of gender. Think about it!

A generation is as Lynski states. Gender is not relevent.

Sorry,
All the 'generation' pictures I've ever seen have been one GENDER or the other.

Thank you Robert, that's my thoughts exactly.

Hi mgnv,

He was under the impression that unless the family members were of the same sex it did not count. On my maternal side it's four females and one male and on my paternal side it's three males and two females.

So does your brother think he's a different generation from you? Weird, eh.

Chrissie2394 Report 22 Dec 2012 23:44

Thanks for your reply Lynski. My thoughts are the same as yours. I did try googling, just saw one photo of 5 generations (all female) and another with 4 generations, again all female.

5 generations is 5 generation regardless of what sex they are

Lynski

Lynski Report 22 Dec 2012 23:40

I would have thought that a generation is a generation regardless of whether they are male or female.

Child
Parents
Grandparents
Great Grandparents
Great Great Grandparents

I guess you could then go on to say there are now 5 generations of females or males.

Just found this - what a nifty way to do a photo -

Can someone please answer this.

My daughter recently found out that the baby she is expecting in May will be a girl and my brother said that will mean there will be five generations in the family. I was already of the opinion that we already had five as I am already a grandma. My brother tells me it only counts if the family members are of the same sex. Is he right?
