Hi Can anyone help me find out where a marriage took place in 1973. I know is Northumberland and possibly New Biggin. Is it possible to look this date up.

You cant look the actual date up but can find the GRO ref if you give the parties names

I have the records from Freebmd but would like to know the church. The date is January 1953. Can I look at the parish records anywhere free. I dont have ancestry at the moment.

You said in your opening post 1973 and then 1953.

You can only buy the cert there is nowhere you can view a marriage.

No you cant view the actual certificate details you would have to buy the cert.

Its only pre c1921 that London parish copies of the mariages have been made available by the London Metropolitan Archives

There are other area's pre 1921 Shirley... Liverpool, Lancashire,Dorset West Yorkshire...there maybe others?

Its the actual church I am trying to find, but I think your right I will have to get the marriage certificate. I have the number but thought it might be quicker to ask on this site. Many thanks to you all who replied. Merry Christmas

When a church register is full, it is usually lodged in the county records office.
If the marr took place in Newbiggin-by-the-sea, then there's no easy way of finding out which church. All one knows is the other names on the page in the GRO ref were wed in the same church.
However, if the marr took place a few miles south, like Seaton Sluice/Hartley area, then that falls in a difft rego district (Tynemouth/N Tyneside), and there is another index for this RD. Here's a 1953 lookup for there:

SMITH, John
Marriage date: 1953
Register Book, Entry Number: A-23 4, 7 Show Spouse

Now A-23 identifies the church - there's no online key saying what the code represents, but one could call the local office to find that out.

The local office could also probably tell you where the original rego's were lodged. However, they're only archived when full, and there's 500 entries in a full rego. John Smith's entry is entry #7 in the 4th rego in the above example.

Note - none of this applies to rego office marrs, nor to churches that weren't authorized to keep official marr rego's. In 1953, the latter would apply to new churches that hadn't finished the authorization paperwork, and to all RC churches.
