On Ancestry 1891 census Cheltenham Gloucestershire. Mary Wood b abt 1837 Syrian Arab Republic, Newington.

The actual page clearly shows place of birth Newington Surrey.

Having searched for 'syrian arab republic' there are loads. How weird.
I wonder if it was the same transcriber??

Mistranscribing can be caused by several different reasons

1: Transcribers abroad whose 1st language is not English

2: Transcribers who do speak English but have no knowledge of UK geography (and that includes UK transcribers)

3: Transcribing done by machines

But there are some very odd and very funny ones around :-)

But there are over 800 entries. Nowhere would the words ' Syrian Arab Republic' appear as there was no such thing. All else aside, there are far too many words being entered, - 5 instead of 2 for example. Even if you can't read the entry (and the ones I had a look at are perfectly clear) there is no reason to do this. And the other details are entered correctly.
I think it's deliberate myself.

Those mistranscriptions appear to only be on Ancestry - FMP are OK.

In one of the censuses (1861 I think) there were a couple of hundred people living in Guernsey whose birthplace was given as Germany.

I did try to get them corrected but I don't know if they ever did.
