Does anyone know how to locate graves without ordering the death cert? William Dixon born 1885 died 1927 gateshead. I have found a site of most of the cemetery's in the area and have trolled though but have found nothing. I have looked not just for william but other relatives as well.
Thanks

Death certificates won't generally indicate a burial place, although address of deceased might indicate a probable area.
Location will depend on several things.
Do you know the area they lived in... maybe occupation will point to a possible district.
Maybe the family used a particular church and the person would be buried in the churchyard, although by that date some churchyards would be full and overflow sites used such as cemeteries. These come under council control and lists can be searched, but sometimes at a cost.

I have been searching for years for the location of someone who died in Hampshire in 1983 and still haven't located him, even though I have a death certificate.

Good luck.

Have you enquired at the local cemetery office?

Not all graves are marked with headstones...........so wandering around is unlikely to be productive.

Are your sure he was buried and not cremated. Not sure when crematoriums started If he was then a look round the crematorium grounds may yield something. If you go in the office you can view thier records

You could try the Parks and cemeteries dept of the local Council giving them the details from the death cert.

I have found Municipal Cemeteries have excellent records and can give row and plot details and who is buried in the same grave even if its a public grave, is what used to be called a paupers grave

Remember that as the burial act of 1853 ordered that burials in cities and towns be discontinued, so therefore any church within the city would no longer be the usual place for someone to be buried, Shirley's idea of contacting the local cemeteries office should point you in the best direction.

There may be a Bereavement Services office attached to the local government office. It may be an idea to approach them, giving them all the details of the deceased available. Invariably, they'll carry out a search for you.

*Edit*

Try Gateshead Council Bereavement Services. This is what they say regarding Historical Searches:
"Unfortunately we do not have the staff to undertake extensive searches of our indexes. If you are able to provide accurate details for the event you are interested in (such as the name and the year of birth, death or marriage) we will carry out a search of the registers for that year and a year either side.

You can request this type of search by phone, email or letter."

Good luck
