I have a birth certificate record for Francis O Hughes

Born :- 30 August 1873 Tyn y Ffrith, Llansannan
Name:- Francis
Fathers Name:- [Left Blank]
Mother's Name:- Anne Owens
Informant:- X the mark of Anne Owens, Mother, Tyn y Frith, Llansannan.
Dated:- 30 September 1873

older members of the family are convinced Francis' father was Thomas Hughes born 1853 died 1929
Anne Owens married Thomas Hughes, but Thomas and Anne did not marry until 7 December 1878 (which is over 5 years later). All their other children were born between 1880 & 1891.
The 1881 Census has them as father and son, and his marriage certificate has Thomas as his father

is there any way I can confirm Thomas as the father? I have been provided with ancestors of Thomas but if he wasn't Francis father then he won't be an ancestor of mine

Was francis registered as Hughes?

Is this not the birth?

Not sure how you can prove it if he is not mentioned on the birth cert.

My gt uncle was born about a year before his mother married, and he was even baptised after they married with a fictitious fathers name but he was always known by my gt grandfathers surname, even though he was registered in his mothers maiden name......he probably never knew any different

Francis is my g grandfather
this is what I believe is his birth registered as Owens
on his marriage cert he is named as Francis Owens Hughes in dec 1901

his death was registered in 1938 as Francis O Hughes, although he actually died in 1934 in a the gresford colliery disaster, in the commemoration book he is listed as Francis Owens-Hughes under 'O' , my grandmother tried to have this changed as she believed his name was Hughes and Thomas was his real father (she also told me his middle name was Owen not Owens) but I wonder if he took the name Hughes when his mother married

It looks like his name was only Hughes because either that was what he was told or he chose to use it.....Thomas maybe his father, but proving it could be difficult

It also seems odd to marry 5 years later unless there was a good reason not to
