Good morning, and thanks for your reply. I would love very much to do some research myself, but as I live in Australia I cannot visit churches, or the various archives in London. Any suggestions to help me would be appreciated in respect to marriages as I have no idea how to establish when a person got married. Thanks

I am in Australia too and have done my research on-line.

With respect to marriages I usually take their birth year and add 15 years (just in case they married very young).

Then I look at the next 10-20 years.

When using FreeBMD you usually get more than one marriage each time you search.

It is then a matter of going to the census and looking for the couples to see if you can narrow down who married who?

It's a case of subscribing to at least one major research site such as

GR
Ancestry
Findmypast

And using the free sites on line. eg
Familysearch
Freebmd
Freereg
Freecen
free searches on deceasedonline for burials which frequently give dod.

There are also numerous local sites if you google the place of interest.

No one has said that FH can be acheived without spending money, and that includes purchasing the occasional BMD certificate from GRO @ £9.25, but a lot can be found without moving outside your comfort zone. ;-)
