Nice to know that my mother was a "normal case".

I have got a copy of two chapters from a book about the St Mary's Hospital Manchester - Chapter 11 World War II and Chapter 12 Post-War Years.

St Mary's Reports referred to them as 'the Country Branches' so I think you are safe in assuming that the Village Branch means Prestbury Hall. If you can get to Poynton, Prestbury or Macclesfield Library they each have a reference copy of a short book on the History of Collar House, including its use by St Mary's in the War. I was born at Collar House and my birth cert says St Mary's Prestbury.
They were a well respected, leading edge, teaching Maternity Hospital and the use of their name was (I think) a sort of early 'brand marketing'.
The difference with Collar House was that it had a theatre so could deal with complicated cases like Caesarian Sections whereas Adlington Hall and Prestbury Hall only took normal cases.

My friend's son was born in the back of an ambulance parked in a layby on the A39. His BC states The Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske.

Assuming the truth gets passed down through his family, there is no documentary proof to back it up :-D

Just goes to show that actual certificates can be misleading. A lesson to us all.

Hi Reggie, No it just says Saint Mary's Hospital, Macclesfield. Which surprised
me because I thought it would have said "Prestbury hall".

Seven weeks after me - but does your certificate say St Mary's Hospital [Village Branch] like mine?

Reggie, I was born on the 3rd of August 1945 in The Mosley Room in Prestbury Hall, Prestbury. Cheshire. but my birth certificate says St. Mary's Macclesfield too.

Is there a specific reason for wanting to know this?

Just read the article but it says:
"During the 1940/45 war the house was used as a maternity hospital as part of “The Country Branch” of St Mary’s Maternity Hospital, Manchester."

So did Country Branch refer to all 3 units or just Prestbury Hall?
Still a little unclear.

It does look as though you were born at the hall which was used as maternity hosp between 1940/5

I was born in 1945 and my birth cert says place of birth St Marys Hospital [Village Branch] Prestbury, Cheshire.

I've found that St Marys Manchester used 3 places in Prestbury during and just after the war years, Adlington Hall, Collar House and Prestbury Hall. The archivist at St Mary's told me that Adlington was used for wives of service personnel and Collar House was referred to as Main Branch, so he assumed I was born in Prestbury Hall.

As I have no relatives to ask, does anyone know for sure that Village Branch does mean I was born in Prestbury Hall - which, if still the same place , is much closer to the village than Collar House.
