I think my Grandfather James Riley spent some time in prison possibly between 1927-1931 or 1933-1937 He lived in gateshead at the time so it was possibly Durham Prison does anyone know how I can confirm this?

Don't assume that he would necessarily have been sent somewhere local.

Depending on his crime, you might find something in the local papers for the time

Try these sites. If you can't find what you are looking for on line, send them an email. If they can't help, they will point you in the right direction.

There are newspapers on this site (at a cost!) but I don't think much of the search engine.
Try:-
http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/

Yep. It is another Brightsolid site. But the advanced search engine is much easier to understand. Searches are free, but you have to pay to see articles.
