I am trying to find my grandmothers death record . She died in hospital greenock 1938. She was about 38yrs old, her name is Mary Wallace nee mcguire she was born in ireland but was on the 1911 census in greenock, I cannot find a marriage but my mother was given her surname of wallace. Mums birth certificate (on ancestry) doesnt have many details.
Thanks Fiona

Scottish BMD's are available only on Scotlands People. It's pay to view - not a site where one can have a subscription

greyghost Report 24 Jan 2013 18:26

If you are sure of the year she died, only one Mary Wallace shows up on Scotland's People as death 1938 in Renfrewshire, which includes Greenock
Mary Wallace death 1938 Renfrewshire Born 1897.

No further details unless you buy and spend credits - 30 credits £7

1 credit to find the record index and 5 to look at the image. You will be able to see the image if the index gives you enough to think it's the right person and download a copy. (Images not available post 1961 for deaths, marriages 1936, births 1911)

Hi FIona,

For Scottish births, marriages and deaths (BMD's) you will need to look at the website Scotlands People.
You can search the indexes, but to get the full details, which is what you are after, you will have to look at the Register entry. For this you need to buy credits.
On the same site, Scotlands People, you could search for your grandmother's marriage since you know her maiden name. Again you need to look up the index and then the Register entry for the full details. Sorry it's not free :-(

As Reggie said above, the website is pay to view.

I would suggest you go to the Scotlands People website and have a play around with it first, get used to it before you pay out any money. That way, when you do pay, there's little chance of you wasting your money ;-)

If you have any info on her Irish background, you could try looking at Roots Ireland for free.... http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com

EDIT: Sorry must have been typing this out as Stuart posted. Ooops.

hi karen
Thanks for your help- am playing around but have managed to waste credits. Are the details on the death cert 100% correct- it lead me to 1911 census which gives her a middle name and born in scotland whereas i thought she was born in ireland,, Also is there any way to decipher the writing - im not able to read her mothers maiden name
Thanks

You don't give any indication of when and where your mother was born.

And you can't see birth certs on Ancestry............so what info are you looking at?

Also, Ancestry do not, in any case, carry Scottish BMD's

And please stick to one post per topic - as per site guidelines

Fiona,
Do you have your grandmothers marriage cert to ..Wallace.
The marriage and the correct death cert should show the SAME parents for her.

Strike that... there is no Wallace/McGuire marriage on SP that I could find

If your grandmother was unmarried, her death cert should be registered with her maiden name , unless she went on to marry someone else before she died.
We require more info.
When and where was your mother born and exactly what info does it contain?

If your mother was born inside of marriage, her birth certificate should have her parents marriage place and date on it.

Anne

Thankyou-I do not have a marriage cert .
I do have a death cert which seems mostly accurate ie date and place and her age, it is in her married name and has george wallace as husband. My mu sarah wallace was born on greenock 3/9/30 there is no image for her cert but she knows that george is down as her father but in fact he had died some years before and she does not know who her father is. My mum says she has seen a record of her birth with georges name on it. I think i have the family on the 1901 census and the 1911 census but the names dont fit with the death cert.

Reggie
sorry abut multiple threads(?) i thought they were all different topics i take it one family is on topic? Do I just stop writing on the other boards about this family im not able to cut and paste etc. Is this the best board for these queries?Ive looked at loads on scots people but the info doesnt all match and as previously said i think my search info is making it difficult.

There is an image of your mother's BC, but no births from 1913 to date are available to view online
The only way to obtain a copy of your mother's birth cert is to order it from SP
It costs £12 and is sent out by post.
The other way to see it, is to visit the SP centres in Edinburgh, Glasgow or Kilmarnock.
A full day visit with unlimited access costs £15 but you can view all records.
The same embargo's will apply to printing/saving the documents ( cannot print/save a birth record after 1912)
Unfortunately, this birth record will not give any indication of how old her parents were in 1930, but if George is listed as the father, his occupation should be on it.

If your grandparents married the date and place of their marriage will be on your mother's birth certificate. So the best thing to do is order the certificate. A child can be registered in the father's name if the father is present at registration even if the parents are unmarried. If George was deceased when your mother was born, the birth certificate of an older sibling may be needed to get the date and place of the marriage.

What names were given for the parents on the death certificate please? Who was the informant?

EDIT

Copied over from thread on Finding Ancestors to keep it all together.

I am trying to find correct parents (and siblings etc) of my grandmother Mary Maguire born 1897 ?lanarkshire ?ireland. A death cert which seems to be most accurate has peter maguire as father (born ireland) which lead me to a census 1911 which has her mother mary maguire deceased but i cant read her mothers maiden name (on the death cert) Actually getting in a bit of a muddle and have ended up with several census which i now think incorrect. (i started off searching mcguire until i got hte death certificate

Her death certificate would not give her father's place of birth. What was his occupation on the death certificate please?

Is this the 1901 census that you think is her family please?

Sorry Erin, I was editing my post as you posted. I do think that we need all the details from the death certificate and any possible census records.

Thankyou- rootgatherer - i have 1911 census that corresponds to that 1911 but now think it is not her.My grandmothers death cert has her father peter maguire (then living) farmer and mother mary maguire nee mcgovern. mary wallace aged41yrs widow of deceased george wallace.the brother in law wlliam logan was registering birth.my mother does not remember a grandfather.she had older siblings mary, george and matilda(tilly) and tom. Iwas in touch with her niece who referred to her as mcguire born 1900 ireland we are not now in touch but i cannot find this birth either. her deth cert has her age 41 , still dont have a date of birth for her.have tried finding georges death but am rapidly going through the credits so need to be more efficient.
