Have you looked at The Times online archive? its quite good for reporting,,,you will need to register.

My newly found uncle told me he found out about his father death by seeing a London paper with his father's photo saying Claude Wooldridge hung himself.

I spent several hours at Colindale newspaper archives scrolling the microfims for the Evening news papers, Standard, Star for the whole 1923.

So disappointing not to find it.

Does anybody have any ideas how I can trace this. I'm not very good with looking up newspapers
Just spoke to uncle just now and he was realy hoping to find the photo of his dad. I know it will probably come on line eventually but he will be 100 in Nov so I don't know how long he will live.

Penny, you have his father, Claude LW born 8 Nov 1913 was the son of Claude SGW - all done and sorted. CSGW married after 1915 but his name and mothers name was miss spelt in the records that is why he was not picked up.

Know everything about the family. Have all his certs and other docs for everybody - it is only the newspaper article we want to find because CLW said he remembers seeing the photo of his dad that is how he knew his dad had died. Childen threw stones at him because suicide was crime back then.

it looks like ClaudeSnr married twice.

( did he also use the name Hutley?)

To be 99 years of age, he was born 1912? I cant see a marriage for Claude Sr before 1915

I think this is quite amazing - he sounds a pretty sound 99-year-old. How fantastic that he has found you.

Thanks so much. My phones not stopped ringing about it.
Finding an uncle we never knew existed has made everybody so emotional. I was so choked when he called me - never spoken to somebody 99 before. Promiced him I would do my best to find the newspaper article :-D :-D

I know you can find old newspapers in the local archives - normally in main library for the area.
Not sure if anything is available online, others might know!

My grandfather Claude Sydney Gordon Wooldridge hung himself 11 Mar 1923 - 29 Gill Street, Stepney, London.

On Sat found a son, Claude 99 years of age we never knew existed.

He has just called me so excited - says he found out about the death of his father when he saw a photo in the newspaper saying he had hung himself.

He says is was a London evening paper - Evening News or Evening Star.

Where would we find this - it is the photo we are after. Can anybody please help
