re birth records

when looking up a birth is the date on the records birth date or date the birth is registered
looking for a relative born dec 1920
can only find a record for jan to mar 1921

Hi terrj.
What you are looking at is the quarter in which the birth was registered. For example, if someone was born 20th Dec 1920 they might have the birth registered in January 1921, in which case it will show in the Jan-Feb quarter..
The only way to get birth date is to buy the cert.

My dad was born 29th Dec 1907. you have 6 weeks to register a birth because then the lying in time was 6 weeks,mums then if the birth was in hospital were in for 3 weeks and it was mostly the mum who reg a birth,. not always tho!!.

His mum reg him in the 3rd week of jan 1908 so he shows in the GRO records as Mar qtr 1908. His birth cert shows his actual birth date

When local registrars offices send their records to the GRO they are done quarterly.

So Birth in Jan-Feb-Mar will probably show up in the following quarters' records

IE

Jan Feb Mar in Apr May Jun
Apr May Jun in Jul Aug Sept
Jul Aug Sept in Oct Nov Dec
Oct Nov Dec in Jan Feb Mar

Hope this helps - this is not 100% definite but does help to explain why someone born in October, November and December of one year will show up as registered the following quarter the next year.
