My great grandfather's siblings faced a similar experience. They were sent to the workhouse in Fulham and from there to the school owned by Hammersmith and Fulham, at Ashford in Middlesex. From there they were sent to Canada, never to see their family again. This was in 1882, but I think the system was still in practice in 1918.

I would bet you will find your children at the Ashford District school. I went to the London Metropolitan Archives where the workhouse records were kept and was given a dusty old ledger to go through. As I turned the pages I had goosepimples as I landed on the handwritten entries of their reception and full details of their time there. You should definitely check with the LMA.

I also found the Hammersmith and Fulham Archives really helpful.

Please could somebody help me. My mother Ethel Buck and her siblings were born in North Hammersmith. Fulham District. When she was five in 1918 her parents split up and they were all placed in a home to await fostering. I would love to know more about it. The home they were in and the records of the time they were there.
I have no idea where to start looking and what or who I need to do to start to find out.
