Hi I am looking to find accurate information for the meaning of the following surnames
Hawkes, Osborn, Topham Humphrey and Crouch - can anyone help. I also need the coat of arms (sons homework!).

I have looked online but it seems you have to pay to get full details.

Take care with ordering a Coat of Arms from some of the firms offering this - my Ma-in-law did it for us as a quite expensive surprise present and it was just awful. Lurid colours,generally tacky and such a wide description of our supposed ancestry that it could have applied to half the country! They claim to be able to find one for absolutely everyone which is just ridiculous so they just go for anything with a vaguely similar name.

There is no such thing as a family coat of arms so don't be taken in by these sites trying to get you to part with your money in return for one!

Arms were granted to an individual, not a family. There are circumstances where they can be passed from father to son but most of us are so far removed from previous arms bearers as to have lost any entitlement there might have been.

However as long as you treat it as a bit of fun there is no harm. Your son might want to try this site

Thank you everyone for your help - I must admit they all look the same but different colours - will have to rethink the homework - hard to find out about family background and culture especially when they were all farmers in the South East - suppose must be Anglo-Saxon but not easy to find out about my family culture!!
