Finding Births in early 1800's

I am tracing the my family tree, currently doing The Mapston / Mapstones.
I know of a couple of relatives born 1815 & 1817, but trying to find the birth & death records comes up with nothing as if they didn't exist..

Do the records go back this far?

TIA
Karen :-S

Have you tried looking at relevant parish records?

Try: https://familysearch.org/

Civil registration in England and Wales did not begin until 1837. You will not therefore be able to find Birth, Marriage and Death certificates for events that took place before 1837.

Thanks..

I am looking for birth records for Reuben Mapstone born 1817/1820 in Somerset. also his wife married 25th April 1838, Sarah Godfrey born 1815 in Long Ashton.

My Mum thinks Reuben was born 1817 but according to the 1841 census he was 20, making him born in 1820.. but still can't find anything..

lancashireAnn Report 5 Feb 2013 20:02

don't forget ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years in 1841. So if he was 23 (born 1817) he would show as 20 on that census

have you found him on any other census?

Somerset (Compton Martin) On-line Parish Clerk may be able to help

http://wsom-opc.org.uk/index.php?id=39&k=298

You can also search PR from the site
http://wsom-opc.org.uk/index.php?id=18

Although PR started to be kept c1538, not all have survived or are legible and intact. Some may still be with the Parishes, others deposited in the County or Diocesan Archives but have not been transcribed nor are on line.

There is always the possibility that your family were Non-conformists, or where RC or even 'didn't bother'! The baptism, if there was one, may be a few years after the birth at the same time as other siblings

Thanks Kathleen.. Yes that was Sarah as a widow in the 1851 census. I have all that info..
The deaths aren't her though, found out she married again, twice.. To a George gallop in 1857 then again in 1864 to a William Hawkins..
