I have been searching for the date and place of birth of my 4x great grandfather for many years now, his name was John Probyn bn abt 1768.
He does not appear in the '41c and died in 1844. He married in Bristol in 1791 but no fathers name appears in the register, on the licence application he is shown as an accountant. The family moved to Bermondsay, Surrey in abt 1792 where John was a brewer. Can anyone suggests documents that I might look for that might indicate fathers name or date/place of birth. I have looked in the Bristol apprentices but he does not appear there.
The Probyn name is origionally Welsh and they abound in the Gloucestershire area and spread to local counties and eventually to London but without a cross reference of name or place any possibilities I find are impossible to prove.
Any help gratefully recieved. Lesley Lee

I can't see how an accountant would change his occupation to a Brewer and move to Surrey from Glous and die in Glous?

You hav'nt told us who he married or how you got to him in the first place.

What does the death cert say about his occupation?

Thanks to all for your interest. Yes he is the John Probyn buried in St Pauls ch Bristol in 1844.
I can only tell you what it said on his marriage licence application, in 1791 he is down as an accountant,he married Mary Mills in Bristol. When they moved to Bermondsay he worked as a brewer as is testified to in his obitury. When he died in Bristol in 1844 his death certs states that he was a "commision agent" which I understand is one who acts as an agent for a company. I do not know why he was back in Bristol as his wife and family were all still living in Bermondsay, perhaps it was a temporary thing. I can see that the Broben entry is compatable but as I explained in my initial post I am unable to be sure of any possibility without a cross reference of a place of birth or parents names, without a census to give me a clue he could have been born anywhere.
