I am trying to work out which record to use for my, potentially, nonconformist ancestors so I purchased a copy of the SOG National Index of Parish Register Vol 7 Part 1
for Suffolk. Not an easy read at all.

I am a bit confused by some of the abbreviation that are used, but not in the list of abbreviations.

On page 138, for Hoxne.
RB CMB…

Then on the next page ‘MI’

CMB could stand for baptism, marriage, burial, and MI possibly Marriage Index but I cannot work out what the RB might stand for.

Ah, john that is clever thinking thanks , but birth restration began in 1837 and the datesafter that abreviation are1711 - 1812
So maybe not.
I find it frustrating when abbreviatons are used that are not included in the list. And i happens in other publicatiosn too.
My husband has the same problem with maps in the travel books tha the reads, that mention places that are not indicated on the map .

MI - Memorial Inscriptions rather than marriages? The type of inscriptions you'd read on headstones or plaques with in a church?

eg
Churchyard Monumental Inscriptions (M.I.s) & other notes

In context on the following site

+++DetEcTive+++ , of course, now that you tell me that it seems very obvious!
Sometimes I cannot see the wood for the trees. :-)
And yes there is a small section in the book titled that, but no abberviation included.

No idea about RB other than Register of Banns.
If you are a subscriber, can you email them for clarification?

CMB would be christenings, marriages, and burials, but the net result is the same as you guessed.

C = Christenings, M = Marriages, B = Burials, Z = Births, D = Deaths, (I) = Index, MIs = Monumental (tombstone) Inscriptions

This is from the SOG library website. Can't help with RB though

Thanks Andrew, I've sent an email to SOG, will post a reply if I get one.

Couldn't it just be Register Book.

If this link works it ahows the image of the front page of such a book albeit in Cornwall.

Reply fro SOG, and very fast at that :-D
The entry on page 138 for Hoxne RB CMB 1711-1812 means christenings, marriages and burials for 1711-1812 occurring in the Register Bills. A description of Register Bills is given on page 10 of the book, where it says: ‘In the Diocese of Norwich there were arrangements different from those in other dioceses, so that in Suffolk annual returns of baptisms, marriages and burials were sent to the archdeacons of Suffolk or of Sudbury, and are known at Register Bills (RBs) or sometimes as Archdeacon’s Transcripts, to be distinguished from Bishop’s Transcripts’. They should be the same as the register entry, although no doubt some errors occurred in copying.

The entry on the following page for MI stands for ‘Monumental Inscriptions’ or in other words the lettering on the gravestones.

Ah - right. Thanks. Never heard of Achdeacons Transcripts or Register Bills so that's something to remember!
