Hi, I would like to know if it is possible to do look up at registry offices in England please?
If so, I have a Lily Ellis I am researching, b ca 1900 supposedly at Enfield, Eng., I think her mother was Alice. Is there anyway someone can look up more details for me please? Thanks, Gwen from Australia

Hi Gwen.

No one can 'look up' at any of the UK register offices - all their records are copied (in England and Wales) to the General Register Office.

They produce a list commonly refered to as the gro (index). That gives the year and quarter in which the birth is registered along with a volume and page number to enable you to purchase a copy of the certificate. A certificate will cost £9.25 and can be ordered from the official source and will give the mother's maiden name, address and the name and occupation of the father if the mother claims to be married

Enfield will be covered by the Edmonton registration district

Ancestry have a number of Enfield baptisms, but those do not include mother's maiden name.

How sure are you of her name and year of birth? There don't appear to be any Lily Ellis reg 1899-1902 in the Edmonton reg district.

Did she marry? If you have her marriage certificate, that ought to give her father's name. We can then hope to find her on the 1901 census if born before April, or the 1911.

Not sure how you are going to sort this one out without being sure of the name of her mother

According to her son's birth cert ., in Sydney NSW., Lily was b in 1904 and according to her m cert she was b in Enfield, 1903 dau of Alice Chapman and Jack Ellis dec. I have not been able to locate them on any census. Cheers, Gwen

Enfield might be a red herring, although not a million miles away.

supposedly Lily came to Aus ca 1924/45, family story is that she was pregnant when she got here, had the child a son Roy and her australian husband , Roy Warrener adopted the baby and gave him his name. Apparently she did not marry the father of the child who was given as Vernon Masters of Manchester, from the child's birth cert.

There is this Lily in 1911 - William says he is married, has been for 4 years and there have been 4 children from the marriage, all still living. So, either those children are elsewhere with their mother or the 3 on the census were born before the marriage. There is also a possible marriage of William to an Alice Chapman:

On the m cert ,Sydney 1925 we have:- Lily Alice Ellis age 22 ,dau of Alice CHAPMAN and Jack Ellis Dec., this would indicate that Alice remarried, on the UK Bdm's in1910 there is a marriage for William Chapman and Alice Ellis. The family story is that Lily's parents came to Aus before she arrived in ca 1923/24 .

Yes she only used those names for the 1980 ER not on any of the others....so I think you will find she was born Lily Mary Florence Chapman and her mother was Alice Chapman (un married)...whether Alice at somepoint married someone called Ellis?? not found one so far, but that does'nt mean she did'nt
