I won't post any more of the IGI would be churlish to deprive you of the pleasure of discovery.

You may already have the baptism info for the children of Joseph and Elizabeth, but in case you don't......................go to

You will then see that on many of the records, the father is recorded as Joseph jr.............which tells you his father's name.

As long as you add all the info you have to your Ancestry tree, it will throw up various hints. Check them and the images carefully to make sure they are relevant. Those of us with access to the Australian records on Ancestry could do it for you, but its more satisfying for you if you do your own research

Civil registration in the UK started Sep 1837. Even then it wasn't compulsary to register B or D for a number of years. We also have to consider that some people chose to co-habit rather than marry

Before 1837 you have to rely on parish records. Try

Always make an internet search for your parish or area of interest for local sites.

*if* Elizabeth is on a passenger list which has been transcribed/survived her name could well be recorded incorrectly, so keep an open mind with the spelling and yob.

For general Australian research, other than Ancestry, try (newspapers to 1950) (newspaper death notices) ( National Archives of Australia - click on record search amongst the text. You don't need to register. Then Name seach from the green tabs.) (South Australia data base)

Thanks for the info. I live in Australia and I have but UK and Australia but obviously I am not asking the right questions in the search engine. I am new to this and find it quite hard at the moment.

If you want anything looked up in Australia please ask.

Reggie Report 18 Feb 2013 13:11

It seems that the family migrated to Australia before 1851 census

Masses of Australian info for them on Ancestry. My sub doesn't stretch that far

Eliazabeth Vigar born 1838 Moorlinch Somerset. Parents Joseph Vigar b 1796 and Elizabeth Bond 1805. Married Pulteney Malcolm Murray b 1819 in Truro, South Australia on 10/02/1857 - she was his second wife. I am interested in how she came to Australia to marry him and any further details of her ancestors or even a picture of her.
