Paul Barton, Special Agent Report 23 Feb 2013 07:57

The National Library of Wales is digitising 2 million pages of historical newspapers and journals relating to Wales, completely free of charge to users. It will launch the new resource on its website early in 2013.

The project aims to digitise all of the National Library's paper holdings of out-of-copyright newspapers and journals - generally those published in Wales up to 1911 and comprising hundreds of different titles touching all corners of Wales.

Learners worldwide will be able to search for words, phrases and dates across 2 million pages and discover countless nuggets of information that would otherwise remain hidden within the covers of heavy bound volumes. This will be the largest body of searchable text relating to Wales.

Thank you Paul. Perhaps at last I shall be able to find my EVANS family actually in Wales rather being stuck in Liverpool c1812. Great news!

Thanks for the info.

Not of any use to me, personally, but will be of great interest to a close friend.

Don't get too excited. The time span is not great and, although the number of pages sounds impressive, there are not that many newspapers covered yet. I think I counted twenty-four and some of them are quite obscure. It's a start, though.
