This is a very useful resource, but it does have one serious drawback - it's not indexed on-site.
So how does one do a lookup - well, I do the lookup first at FS:

Some years (1850/70, 1900/40) FS provide a free image - just click on link on left-hand side of page.
So lets do a worked example of how to use this index - I'm looking for this guy:
Births Mar 1859 (>99%)
LOTT Adolphus Lawrence Greenwich 1d 639
In 1861, he's in England with his dad (Adolphus) rg9/1452/48/34-49/35
He emigrates to ME in the late 1860s.

[What we will need is the NARA reel #, but note the LDS film # has the same last 3 digits as the NARA reel # - some years the don't give both]
Now go to http://archive.org/details/1880_census and click on Texas, then click on reel 1299 - Dallas must have been a village back then, as the whole of Dallas Co doesn't fill a reel - it's shared with 2 other counties. (Tarrant Co - where Ft Worth is - shares the reel with 4 other counties.)
Next click on "read online" to get to:

Edit this URL (changing the page # and the upness) to:

Next pick a unique-ish name on the page that you think will have been transcribed accurately, e.g., Elizabeth Hart on Line 23 a=20 or 21 - and look this up on FS. You might specify her county/state of residence as Dallas TX

Just a word of warning - the slider bar at right is hyper-sensitive, so never use it, not even click on it.
Use the page clicker at bottom right, by the magnifier - you can scroll around the page with the grabby-mouse thingy.
Also, magnify at least 4 clicks before you save the image - lesser clicks save files of lesser resolution.
