I am considering DNA testing.
Has anybody partaken in any of the myriad of programmes on offer? If so has it assisted/confirmed their research or raised questions?
In particular ... my Grandfather was born illigitimate and therefore my Surname is that of my Great Grandmother. She married less than a year after my Grandfather was born and we believe that the man she married was my Grandfather's father. Is it likely that a Y-DNA67 Test may confirm this? This would of course totally change my Pedigree and Paternal line.

Ian, I have just sent off a sample for analysis. I have to wait about six weeks minimum before I get any results. I am using the Britains DNA site.

As I understand it the results are not going to have any bearing on my recent genealogy, they relate to DNA markers that date from much earlier periods.

You might have to get a DNA sample from one of your Grandfather's (half) siblings, or a descendent from one of them.

Then you'd probably have to find a specialist lab. It would be likely to cost a lot more than one of the 'What was my route out of Africa' companies!

Best to contact some of the companies which offer DNA paternity testing, and see if it is a viable option.

If they could prove that the skeleton in the car park was Richard III, they ought to be able to sort out your family involving fewer generations. But is it really worth the expense?
