Will passports ever become available documents for access? Are there any sources on the origins of passports as legal documents?

Hi Lawrence,

You can search passport applications on FMP from 1851 to 1903.

The only problem is you can't search by individual name only by entering 3 characters.

Hi Lawrence, it depends on the period in question. Bear in mind that passports weren't compulsory before about the early 1900s (I'm sure someone will be along with the history)

Many of our ancestors emigrating would not have had passports.

I think passports as we know them were first required about the time of the first world war. It was a single sheet folded into eight? and held in a cardboard cover.

At present I would not imagine that any 'new' passport details will become available.

They are now all connnected to Drivers Licences details, DWP details etc., so under the Data Protection Act I cannot foresee any of these details being made open.
