Tree faults?

GEDCOM import / export worked perfectly well before the big "upgrade" a year ago. Now the tree and boards are at least working I guess they are being very cautious about fixing anything else.

I had a PM from Phil that in any case it is BrightSolid that are responsible for the tree, which shares common code with their other products. No comment.

Contrary to what many believe, gedcom transfers are not foolproof and compatibility problems abound as features supported on one tree program are not supported on another and vice versa.

Without seeing specific details it is difficult to comment as to where the problem lies and GR could have the same problem. You probably need to provide them with specific examples, names etc, as to where you think it has gone awry.

No, I still have had people whooshed from the tree and had to add them back in before the print run, but as you can see, there other problems

I dont see much point in adding info to your tree and not being able to print it as it is designed.

Thank heavans I have a printer who is willing to change/add data at his end!

Thanks for tip about adding an unamed father, I'll remember that for the future

Sorry Gins but your last message seems a far cry from your original "doom and gloom"

I take it now, that you are talking about GEDCOM Compatability issues with your local software raher than a fault on Genes.

I too have observed that if you add a child to an unmarried Mother then it appears detached when exported and viewed in (say) Family Tree Maker. The solution is to add an unknown father as a Spouse (It takes 2).

All my recent changes are shown correctly on my tree.

Message sent!

Dear GR

I have sent my GR Tree to the printer and he came back to me with a host of problems, here are just a few

When you add a child/children to the mother only (father had died and mother continued to have children, father unknown) your software, adds the mother again, creating a mini tree within the main tree

This means that the children and additional mother do not show any connection to the main tree and sit randomly alone!

Also, I entered the occupations of my tree members only to find, the printer couldn’t add them due to your software. He is having to go through hundreds of tree members individually and manually enter the occupations.

This has added a substantial cost to my tree print

Please can you respond with your suggestions/explanation?

Thank you

Just a little update!

I sent my tree to a printer and the problems took 3 hours on the phone to sort out.

Lines were disconnected and occupations are all over the place. The printer is having to go through each individual and add the occupations – at a cost of course

Also, when you add a child to a mother only (the husband died and she carried on having children!) it disconnects all of the children and the mother from her dead husband) from the tree and adds the mother AGAIN as a separate entity.

You end up with mini trees within your tree and there is no connection

So, the printer has had to connect the children to the 'alleged' father, even though he is not the father

The only way you can tell he's not the father is by checking his death date, against the children’s birth dates

I will be sending GR an email

Good gracious!

I am not sure I want to access my tree at the moment for fear of what might happen or what I might find.

But I do have a recent backup and also have my tree on Ancestry.

I take it that you have reported this to Support?.

I should be interested to see what they have to say.

In the meantime I am giving my Genes tree a miss.

wig, you should export you tree on a gedcom file (See Family Tree above). Then you can read it into any other family tree program, however it only saves text and relationships, not photos and records.

Do that regularly to ensure your tree is backed up.

Read the FAQ on GEDCOMS.

I don’t know Wig, I’m of the generation where everything is electronic

It was always OK in the past on GR, but now I have ancestors, that are not linked with decedents

Strange, I always work back to link the ancestors, so how on earth you can get ancestors, without decedents is beyond me

I’ve just gone to look at my tree and the details I have included in the last few weeks have gone walkies....and, yes, I have saved them

I have mini trees within my tree and lines are disconnected
